Is a second hand Mercedes-Benz EQA a good car?
The Mercedes EQA is the electric version of the GLA - it’s a small SUV that makes a tempting alternative to a Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron or BMW iX1. Being based on the GLA means it’s heavily related to the other models in Mercedes’ A-Class range, and shares much of their interior and technology.
There are a few variants of the EQA, with various battery sizes and power outputs, but no version is what you’d call a hot performer. Unlike the Tesla Model Y Performance there’s no really fast version available, which is no great loss because the EQA isn’t particularly satisfying to drive at the best of times. It’s powerful enough and handles corners okay, but the weight of the batteries means that even on the adaptive suspension of some models the EQA is very firm over bumps and potholes.
EQAs will officially do between 263 - 316 miles on a full charge, depending on which model you select. That’s a reasonable range but nothing groundbreaking, and efficiency isn’t anything to write home about either - expect between 200 - 280 miles in the real world.
The EQA’s tech is a highlight. The dashboard has two 10.0-inch displays set under a single sheet of glass, which makes them look like one giant widescreen display. The screens are super high-res and the interface is easy to use, and you can get some really cool features like an augmented-reality sat-nav which overlays directions onto a live camera feed making complicated junctions a little easier.
It’s a shame that the rest of the interior doesn’t really live up to the premium badge. It’s the same as you get on a much cheaper A-Class, and though it looks great it feels low-rent in places and there are several spots where a well-placed prod elicits a worrying creak.
A BMW iX1 feels much better-built inside, and it’s more spacious too - with a bigger boot and more rear legroom. The EQA’s boot is positively puny, and the rear seats are best suited to children.
What to look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz EQA
Mercedes’ reputation for reliability isn’t the greatest, and the company came a lowly 25th out of 32 manufacturers in the 2024 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey. The EQA is subject to one recall, relating to the bolts on the brake caliper housing. Check that any used example has had this remedial work done.
The EQA is a heavy car and powerful electric cars can be hard on their tyres, so check that those fitted have plenty of remaining tread. As with any car that spends a lot of time in the city, you should look out for car park dents and scrapes, or kerbing marks on the expensive alloy wheels.
With four possible powertrains and two trim levels, it can be tricky to know exactly what kind of EQA you’re buying. The 250 model is the entry-level, while the 250+ gets a larger battery. The 300 and 350 versions have the smaller battery of the 250 but more performance.
Whichever model you choose, they’re great value used - which is good, as they were expensive cars to buy when new.
