In 1962, renown Dallas artist Dmitri Vail created an oil painting of Audie Murphy. Audie Murphy was an admirer of Vail's work and while in the Dallas area travelled to Vail's studio on five separate days to pose for the portrait. It was reported by a Dallas newspaper that the painting was destined to hang in the Texas State Capitol with another portrait created by another Dallas artist, Kipp Soldwedel (Simpson, page 412).

As it turned out, the Vail painting never ended up in the state capitol. It hung for a long period of time in the Addison, Texas home purchased by Audie Murphy over a staircase. Later, this home was converted to a restaurant called "Dovies" which has since closed because of financial difficulties. The painting was later acquired by the Murphy family and is now on display at the Audie Murphy - American Cotton Museum in Greenville, Texas.

Kipp Soldwedel Painting, 1951
On display in the Texas State Capitol, Austin, Texas.

In 1951, a group of Dallas citizens commissioned another famous local artist, Kipp Soldwedel. The portrait, when finished, was presented to and accepted by the State of Texas represented by Governor Allan Shivers. At the time of the ceremony, Audie flew to Austin from Hollywood for the presentation. During the visit, he spoke to both the senate and representative houses where he was cheered (Simpson, page 412).

In a letter dated May 14, 1999 sent from the Texas State Preservation Board, the board stated ... "Murphy's portrait was painted in 1950 by artist Kipp Soldwedel. As of March 19, 1999, the Murphy portrait hangs in the House Chamber of the Texas State Capitol. Recently, the portrait was on display at the Capitol Visotors' Center (which is the old General Land Office Building, or GLO) in an exhibition commemorating native Texans who received the prestigious Medal of Honor for service in a war. Prior to this exhibit, the portrait hung in the Senate Chamber on the second floor in the east wing of the Capitol; and, before that the painting hung in the outer office of the House Sergeant-at-Arms from circa 1951 until 1985."

In an email to the webmaster, James C. Mosier wrote ... "The painting of Audie in the Texas Capitol was, as you say, hanging in the Sergeant-At-Arms office until 1985. The painting was moved back into the House where by law it was supposed to always hang. In 1979 I went to the capitol to see this painting and found it hanging behind an office door in the Sergeant At Arms office. It could not be viewed by the public. I fired off an angry letter to the Governor of Texas and later to the Governor after him . Seven years later and many more letters led to the painting being in a place of honor in the capitol. Guided tours now make stops at the painting and the history of Audie is told."

Unknown Artist, 2010
From the private collection of Dave Phillips

In 2010, avid fan and historian D. Phillips, also a private collector of Audie Murphy memorabilia, travelled to the continent of Africa on business and discovered an unknown female African painter with amazing skill. D. commissioned the artist to paint a new portrait of Audie Murphy based on old photographs.

Working in a hut poorly lit with a single light bulb, the artist produced the amazing image seen here.

Later, in May 2011, this same oil painting was published on the inside cover of the American Legion magazine. The image completely filled the entire page."

Richard Krause Painting #1, "By Dawn's Early Light"
On permanent display at the Audie Murphy / American Cotton Museum.

Renown and accomplished artist Richard Krause of St. Louis, Missouri created a series of seven paintings portraying Audie Murphy around 1998. As the created each painting, he donated the original artwork to the Audie Murphy Research Foundation. All of the paintings have now been placed on permanent loan with the Audie Murphy / American Cotton Museum located in Greenville, Texas where all are now on exhibit.

The artist told the Foundation that he hoped his work would inspire anyone that studied them ... particularly children. It was his hope that the paintings would help us never forget the terrible price paid by those in uniform who secured our freedom.

"By Dawn's Early Light" represents a soldier's mourning after the battles are done. In this painting Audie Murphy contemplates the discarded helmet of fallen buddy, Lattie Tipton. Unbeknownst to Audie at the time, a white dove carries Lattie's tags toward heaven.

This painting measures 30" x 40", oil on canvas, and 40" x 50" in its custom frame.
