Her Royal Highness presented the shamrock to Officers and Warrant Officers, who in turn issued it along the ranks. The parade concluded with a march-past during which His Royal Highness Prince William took the salute. The regiment were formed by Queen Victoria in 1900 to honour the Irishmen who had fought in the Second Boer War. In WWI they played a prominent part in the First Battle of Ypres, the Battle of Loos and the Battle of the Somme. Their first honorary Colonel-of-the-Regiment was Field Marshal Lord Roberts, nicknamed 'Bobs'. Because of this, the regiment was called 'Bob's Own' but are affectionately known as 'The Micks' . RM2DP5WG2–The arrival of Royal Irish Guards at Chelsea 1900.The regiment were formed by Queen Victoria in 1900 to honour the Irishmen who had fought in the Second Boer War. In WWI they played a prominent part in the First Battle of Ypres, the Battle of Loos and the Battle of the Somme. Their first honorary Colonel-of-the-Regiment was Field Marshal Lord Roberts, nicknamed 'Bobs'. Because of this, the regiment was called 'Bob's Own' but are affectionately known as 'The Micks' .
