Dental Bonding
What is Dental Bonding?
Bonding is an alternative to veneers and can be used as a restorative procedure for teeth that are chipped, cracked, discolored or misarranged.
How does it work?
The tooth is prepared for the procedure by lightly etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, a tooth colored resin is applied and sculpted into the desired shape by the dentist. Once set, the resin is trimmed, smoothed and polished to a natural appearance.
Considerations for tooth bonding
The bonding procedure can often be completed in a single office visit, and can improve the appearance of a tooth significantly. However, since the resin used is not as strong as your natural tooth enamel, it is more likely to stain, chip or break than natural teeth. Bonding typically needs to be repaired and replaced more than a porcelain veneer or crown.
Common Questions
How long does dental bonding last?
A bond will generally last for 4 to 8 years. The life of the bond is mostly determined by its location on the tooth and the chewing habits of the individual. Bonds that are located on the edge of your tooth have a shorter lifespan due to the force caused by biting. The types of food you eat will also have an effect on how long your bond lasts. If you are worried about wearing down your bond, stick to foods that are softer over ones that are sticky or crunchy.
How to care for bonded teeth
Bonded teeth require no care outside of what you would do for general dental health. You should brush and floss as normal. Dental bonds can and will stain so try to avoid excess wine, coffee, tea, tobacco, and dark sodas.
Does insurance cover dental bonding?
Because dental bonding is generally considered to be a cosmetic procedure, it is not covered by insurance. However, you can always call your provider and ask about coverage for cosmetic dental work.
