In 1958 the Lutheran church of Sweden said yes to the ordination of women. On Palm Sunday 1960 the first three were ordained, and over the following ten years 54 women were ordained to serve as priests in Church of Sweden. This book is about their stories. It presents a unique source material consisting of stories from 34 of these women where they account for their path to ordination and the first years in service. They tell about what it was like to discover a calling, study to become a priest and what it was like to step in front of the altar for ordination. They tell about how they theologically understand their calling, and about contact with congregations, colleagues and bishops. They tell about the joy of having their calling recognized, but also about the difficulties that arose when recognition was denied by opponents to the reform, or conditioned through the so called clause of conscience. Through these stories a vivid picture is painted of how a policy decision worked out in practice, in the lives of individuals and congregations, that completes and complicates simplified historiography.

Es gibt theologische Diskussionen in der orthodoxen Kirche über die Frauenordination und es bestehen verschiedene theologische Positionen nebeneinander. Es besteht jedoch nach wie vor kein Einvernehmen in dieser Frage. Theologische und praktische Argumentationen im Sinne eines Pro und Contra bildeten sich im Laufe der Zeit heraus, bei denen der Akzent sich auf unterschiedliche Aspekte der Anthropologie, Ekklesiologie, des kanonischen Rechts, der Tradition, der liturgischen Theologie und der Theologie von Amt und Priestertum verlagerte. Ökumenische Diskussionen, missionarische Herausforderungen, Erwartungen von Kirchenmitgliedern, die Entwicklung von theologischen Argumenten, Erfahrung und nicht-theologische Faktoren beeinflussten und beeinflussen die Dynamik der Diskussionen über die Frauenordination. Bis in die 90er Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts wurde die Auffassung, dass es keine theologischen Gründe gibt, Frauen nicht zu weihen, sondern es sich lediglich um eine kirchliche Tradition handelt, kaum vertreten. Inzwischen wird dies weithin akzeptiert. Im Moment gibt es in der orthodoxen Kirche nach wie vor keine Praxis der Zulassung von Frauen zum ordinierten, hierarchischen Amt. Selbst wenn das Patriarchat von Alexandrien in dieser Phase bei der Umsetzung seiner Entscheidung von 2016, den Diakoninnenstand wieder herzustellen, gescheitert ist, hat es zumindest dieses Thema innerhalb der Orthodoxen Kirche zumindest ins Gespräch gebracht, nicht nur für Teilnehmer an theologischen Kongressen. Manchmal kann der Flügelschlag eines Schmetterlings, mit dem das Ereignis im Patriarchat von Alexandrien verglichen werden kann, ausreichen, um große Veränderungen einzuleiten.
