Soho

Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that enables computers and other devices to communicate using a RF signal enabling a lot of advanced applications to provide services. Nowadays, Wi-Fi signal coverage is almost a must in any office building or small office home office (SOHO) environment. Home and office networking concept involves the use of wireless sensors/Wi-Fi routers around the house to control and detect signals in the home-setting. In this project, however, RF signals from Wi-Fi NIC and ZigBee motes received signal strength indicators (RSSI) were used as a base feed to our system testbed to detect the human presence inside an indoor home/office environment. Then, a controller is used to switch ON/OFF appliances like air conditioning, lights …etc. The system testbed doubles as a reliable alarm for physical intrusion detection to secure an indoor perimeter as demonstrated in the paper. This simple, yet cheap, approach to home/office networking promises to save energy and cost in large numbers. It can also be used in many industrial settings including control and security applications.

Home-based entrepreneurs (HBEs) represent a large number of New Zealanders who operate their entrepreneurial businesses in isolation and often out of view. They contribute to the New Zealand economy in many significant ways. All provide employment for themselves, sometimes when no other employment options are available. Many employ others and contribute to the national, record low unemployment rate. Still others represent the beginnings of much larger businesses. This chapter draws upon the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) New Zealand data for 2003. GEM New Zealand aims to reveal the nature of entrepreneurship as a social and economic phenomenon within the New Zealand context. Carried out yearly by UNITEC's New Zealand Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and supported by the London Business School and Babson College in the USA, GEM New Zealand for the first time presents results about home-based entrepreneurs.

In 1974 the British Board of Film Censors refused to grant a certificate to the Swedish documentary More About the Language of Love (Mera ur Kärlekens språk, 1970, Torgny Wickman, Sweden: Swedish Film Production), due to its explicit sexual content. Nevertheless, the Greater London Council granted the film an ‘X’ certificate so that it could be shown legally in cinemas throughout the capital. This article details the trial against the cinema manager and owners, after the film was seized by police under the charge of obscenity, and explores the impact on British arguments around film censorship, revealing a range of attitudes towards sex and pornography. Así, destaca el estilo del trabajo editorial que hay detrás de cada una de estas obras, la intervención del director de la publicación y los principios que rigen su método de trabajo a partir de que Daniel Samper Ospina asumió como su director en 2001.

According to the transnational architecture, several buildings and architectures travel all around the world, but also names such as Soho or Venice do the same and it's interesting understand the reasons and how this phenomenon happens and which are the differences between them when these names land in completely different territories. The main idea is to investigate the reasons, the vectors and the effects of the naming processes in different part of the world and also research, if possible, the international framework through which the mobility of the naming process has done its course. The research question is also related to the typical international, artistic and fashionable atmosphere which join together these districts through the world: starting from London's Soho district to that of New York's which can be considered as first example of this tendency related to the naming transfer. Why and how the name " Soho " travelled from London to New York and then all over the world? In order to tackle these issues, some examples are taken from the Soho all around the world in order to understand the reasons by which the naming process took place and the heterogeneous effects that has characterized the built environment, the social-economical sphere and the peculiar context in which they are in. This aspect of the analysis it's crucial because if the name is the same, maybe the concrete and environmental effects change from one place to another: the comparison and the georeferencing tool on GIS software are the main tools through which it's possible to explore more in depth the theme. Secondly, it's crucial realize how many differences and similarities are present in each example studying the gaps and the typical expression of each Soho because the naming process in every landing modify something and evolve and this is a peculiar characteristic of transnationalism in contemporary cities. Introduction In order to build the general framework of the naming transfer process, it's quite interesting understand the origins of the name Soho and its transfer from West End London to New York. The word " Soho " was first an hunting cry during a rabbit hunting session precisely in the area where nowadays it's present the Soho district: in fact before the Great Fire of London in 1666, Soho was almost entirely made up of fields with a few farm and cottages 1. Later on the name was used in order to indicate that particular area of London as expressed in a letter of J. Keats 2 in 1818: from then Londoners commonly called the area Soho. More than a century later, a former industrial neighbourhood in Manhattan got its name from an acronym, " South of Houston Street " because of its position in the regular grid 3. The area has become a famous example of inner-city regeneration and gentrification, encompassing socioeconomic , cultural, political and architectural developments. In the late 1960s, the city was redeveloping the area and used the acronym widely in its planning documents and an New York Times article dated 19 October 1969 described the area as " one of the city's finest architectural areas, the cast-iron district […] characterized by " the spacious loft buildings that once harboured mostly small businesses have been infiltrated by thousands of artists and their families ". The name was given also considering the important fashionable influence of London's Soho: but what is not clear is why and how this name travelled all around the world in this last 50 years and this is the reason why I have chosen to deepen more this topic.

A period of innovation in harp design and manufacture followed the relocation of Sebastien Erard (1752-1831) from Paris to London in 1792.  Through an examination of twenty-one patents registered in London by fifteen makers between 1794 and 1845, this paper traces technical developments, revealing an increasingly innovative, mechanised, competitive and expanding industry.  The key protagonists and the relationships between them, and the scale of their production, are examined with reference to trade directories and other evidence.

The impact of political unrest and border closures between England and France on harp development are assessed, revealing hitherto unrecognised agents of innovation, including clockmakers and other craftsmen displaced by the French Revolution.  Although the shift of the centre of harp production from Paris to London – itself in the grip of revolution, but here industrial – is marked by the ready availability of Erard’s new harp in comparison with the scarcity of new French instruments, it is argued that the double-action instrument, in particular, was initially slower to take off than has previously been claimed by Roslyn Rensch and other commentators.

The single-action harp underwent a period of sustained technical and decorative evolution in France during the second half of the eighteenth century. When Sebastien Erard (1752-1831), one of its principal makers, moved from Paris to London in 1792, he redesigned the harp, registering his first patent in 1794. He initially increased the harp’s range and size, refined its mechanism, and abandoned the rococo decoration of the earlier French models in favour of the then fashionable neo-classical. Erard’s patents culminated in the double-action harp, now commonly termed ‘Grecian’. 

Through scrutiny of early nineteenth-century architectural, ornamental, decorative treatises, and surviving instruments, I discuss the relationship between the design and decoration of the so-called ‘Grecian’ harp (1811-1825) and neo-classical architecture. A nomenclature, based on the classical orders, is proposed to describe the harp column, which was the most complex decorative feature of Sebastien Erard’s innovation. Through an evaluation of reverse-carved moulds surviving from the Erard, Erat and Morley harp workshops, the ornaments applied to the column are correlated with architectural features and the processes used to make them are discussed.

This paper has been written by keeping in mind the fact that it fulfills the basic needs required for a SOHO infrastructure. This efficient design will enable plug-and-play type node connectivity for scalability and will be centrally administered as discussed in detail in subsequent sections of the paper.
