This paper gives a survey of the infrastructure currently being developed in the MUSITECH project. The aim of this project is to conceptualize and implement a computational environment for navigation and interaction in internet-based musical applications. This comprises the development of data models, exchange formats, interface modules and a software framework. Our approach is to integrate different information and media types like MIDI, audio, text based codes and metadata and their relations, especially to provide means to describe arbitrary musical structures. We attempt to connect different musical domains to support cooperations and synergies. To establish platform independence Java, Extensible Markup Language (XML), and other open standards are used. The object model, a framework and various components for visualization, playback and other common tasks and the technical infrastructure are being developed and will be evaluated within the project.

The following is a general guideline for creating digital collections and working with early Indiana documents. Once you decided to digitize a manuscript collection and created a plan, there are ways you can enhance your collection. 1. Taking the time to learn how to read historical handwriting and manuscript collections. 2. Conducting extensive research on the collection. 3. Carefully selecting your collection’s metadata. 4. Promoting your collection once it is live. While explaining the steps, I incorporate examples from my experience reading, researching, inputting metadata, and uploading documents from the New Harmony Collections for the Indiana State Library.

The importance of understanding the quality of data used in any GIS operation should not be underestimated. Metadata (data about data) traditionally provides a description of this quality information, but it is frequently deemed as complex to create and maintain. Additionally, it is generally stored separately from the data leading to issues with updates to the data not being reflected in the metadata and to users not being aware that metadata exists. These issues have gained increasing importance as more and more non-specialists access GIS software and data – driven by Free Open Source Software (FOSS) and Open Data, particularly in an academic context. This paper describes an approach to address these two issues – tightly coupling data and metadata and automating many elements of standardsbased metadata creation. The tools have been developed using the FOSS packages Quantum GIS and PostGIS.

An important strand of research that is often neglected in the field of affective computing is that of how users respond to simulated displays of emotion. We present an overview of the few studies that have explicitly investigated this space and discuss a number of issues related to simulated emotion research. An overview of our own work in this area is then provided, along with forthcoming studies that we plan to conduct. We conclude with a number of suggestions of where future research in this space should focus.

In today's society, an enormous amount of data is created that is stored in various databases. Since the data is in many cases stored in different databases, there is a demand from organizations with a lot of data to be able to merge separated data and get an extraction of this resource. Extract, Transform and Load System (ETL) is a solution that has made it possible to easily merge different databases. However, the ETL market has been owned by large actors such as Amazon and Microsoft and the solutions offered are completely owned by these actors. This leaves the consumer with little ownership of the solution. Therefore, this thesis proposes a framework to create a component based ETL which gives consumers an opportunity to own and develop their own ETL solution that they can customize to their own needs. Software assets are key output of the RAGE project and they can be used by applied game developers to enhance the pedagogical and educational value of their games. These software assets cover a broad spectrum of functionalities – from player analytics including emotion detection to intelligent adaptation and social gamification. In order to facilitate integration and interoperability, all of these assets adhere to a common model, which describes their properties through a set of metadata. In this paper the RAGE asset model and asset metadata model is presented, capturing the detail of assets and their potential usage within three distinct dimensions – technological, gaming and pedagogical. The paper highlights key issues and challenges in constructing the RAGE asset and asset metadata model and details the process and design of a flexible metadata editor that facilitates both adaptation and improvement of the asset metadata model.

This paper describes the use of adaptation patterns in the task of formulating standards for adaptive educational hypermedia (AEH) systems that is currently under investigation by the EU ADAPT project. Within this project, design dimensions for high granularity patterns have been established. In this paper we focus on detailing lower granularity adaptive patterns based upon learning styles. Several patterns from existing AEH system case studies are identified and classified according to an extended learning style "onion" model. This model forms the basis of a learning style taxonomy, introduced here, whose components determine adaptation patterns for AEH. These patterns are of importance both for authoring, as well as for interfacing between adaptive hypermedia systems. From an authoring point of view, these patterns may be used to establish a fine-grain approach to instructional strategies that can be implemented in AEH systems, as a response to a particular learning style. The implementation of this adaptation pattern taxonomy is discussed, both generally and in detail.

The IMDI standard provides a simple mechanism for extending its scope: key-value pairs. Every major section of the session description includes a sub-schema for key-value pairs. To store information here, you add a pair, give it a key comparable to schema elements and choose a value from a vocabulary to be assigned to the key. This results in a slightly less-structured representation than what could be achieved with an extension of the standard, but it does allow for a quick start, with the chance to later formally propose an extension of the standard promoting the keys to scheme elements. In order to simulate the concept of element groups, we suggest key values with dots for the moment, such as Hearing Status.Hearing for Actor.keys.

This paper proposes a software architecture and a development process for engineering dependable and controllable self-organising (SO) systems. Our approach addresses dependability by exploiting metadata to support decision making and adaptation based on the dynamic enforcement of explicitly defined policies. Control is obtained by actively modifying metadata, policies or components. We show how this applies to two different systems: (1) a dynamically resilient Web service system; and (2) an industrial assembly system with self-adaptive and SO capabilities.

This paper discusses a novel metadata element set for describing cultural heritage objects and their digital representations, which is particularly useful for building virtual exhibitions. The element set is based on several international standards and current best practice in museums. Additional elements are used for describing new types of data used in virtual exhibitions and taking into account new ways of using that data. The implementation of the element set and a number of tools used to manipulate the metadata descriptions in the ARCO project are described.

This study investigates the extent to which phonological characteristics of Farsi speakers of English interfere with their intelligibility when they interact with L1 Australian English speakers. Many students who are learning English within Iran, as well as Farsi speakers of English abroad, have difficulties in pronunciation that have an effect on their intelligibility when they interact with L1 English speakers. This study examines L1 Australian English speakers' perceptions of the effect of pronunciation on intelligibility of Farsi speakers of English. A sample of four Farsi speakers of English and five L1 Australian English speakers participated in this research. The research method included an unstructured interview, twenty sentences that contained specific phonemes, and ten sentences including consonant clusters. The Farsi speakers of English were invited to participate in the process by attending an interview and reading aloud the two sets of sentences whilst being tape recorded. Then, the L1 Australian English speakers were invited to listen to the tape recording of the Farsi speakers of English and answer the three sets of questions accordingly. The findings demonstrated that the phonemes and consonant clusters which do not exist in the Farsi sound system and syllable structure caused difficulties for Farsi speakers of English to a varying degree.

The paper presents a visualization-based approach to explore large databases of geographic metadata. The aim of the data exploration is to search and acquire expressive geographic data to create a geographic information system. Metadata repositories which provide information about available geographic data exist on the web and are usually queried to perform data acquisition task. We propose a visualization--based tool to assist the user in this metadata exploration. The approach is characterized by the integration of multi visualization techniques, interaction methods and data mining concepts. The use of multi visualization techniques and a dynamic interaction with them allow to discover new information among data and assists the user in his reasoning.

Metadata records made available by content providers often lack the implicit information of their original use environment. Metadata aggregators therefore tend to emphasize completeness as a primary quality for shareable metadata. However, when adding implicit information to item-level records, data providers increase the redundancy of information contained in records from the same collection. The present paper reports on an effort to assess the extent and potential impact of information redundancy in metadata collections aggregated using the Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. The first experiment quantifies the resemblance of metadata records on a collection-by-collection basis across 176 metadata collections aggregated for the CIC metadata portal. A second experiment measures the tendency of items from the same collection to appear together in results lists generated for a set of user queries. Results of the analyses correlate and suggest that within some collections item-level metadata records are not sufficiently differentiated to support certain digital library functions well. Metadata collections have a distinct role when included in larger aggregations, and in that role a minimum level of descriptive granularity is required to support digital library functions implemented by service providers. The experiments suggest possible ways to deal simultaneously with metadata record completeness, consistency, and redundancy.

In this system we propose a novel privacy-preserving mechanism that supports public auditing on shared data stored in the cloud. In particular, we exploit ring signatures to compute verification metadata needed to audit the correctness of shared data. With our mechanism, the identity of the signer on each block in shared data is kept private from public verifiers, who are able to efficiently verify shared data integrity without retrieving the entire file. In addition, our mechanism is able to perform multiple auditing tasks simultaneously instead of verifying them one by one. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our mechanism when auditing shared data integrity. In bioinformatics, we are familiar with the idea of curated data as a prerequisite for data integration. We neglect, often to our cost, the curation and cataloguing of the processes that we use to integrate and analyse our data. Programmatic access to services, for data and processes, means that compositions of services can be made that represent the in silico experiments or processes that bioinformaticians perform. Data integration through workflows depends on being able to know what services exist and where to find those services. The large number of services and the operations they perform, their arbitrary naming and lack of documentation, however, mean that they can be difficult to use. The workflows themselves are composite processes that could be pooled and reused but only if they too can be found and understood. Thus appropriate curation, including semantic mark-up, would enable processes to be found, maintained and consequently used more easily. This broader view on semantic annotation is vital for full data integration that is necessary for the modern scientific analyses in biology. This article will brief the community on the current state of the art and the current challenges for process curation, both within and without the Life Sciences.

Web-based tagging systems for educational resources allow users to associate free keywords with resources. This paper first studies similarities and differences of tagging systems that are an integrated part of learning platforms, and then introduces a case study on teachers' use of social tagging tools. Analysing more than 20,000 teacher-created tags from five platforms, it was found that even if the tagging system designs differ, more than 30% of the posts were shared through tags between two or more platforms. Thus, tags can create interplay not only between the users and their tools, but also between diverse learning platforms.

This paper presents a new approach to develop the strategy of Model–View–Controller architecture pattern in Business Intelligence (BI) architecture. On November 14th and 15th 2017, at the Stabat Mater room of Archiginnasio Public Library of Bologna, the conference "Il libro antico. Limiti e prospettive dei censimenti", coordinated by Regione Emilia-Romagna-Istituto per i beni artistici, culturali e naturali (IBC), took place. On the first day there has been two sessions: one morning session titled "I fondi librari antichi: un patrimonio da conoscere, promuovere, valorizzare, tutelare" ; and one afternoon session titled "Catalogare per conoscere, promuovere, valorizzare, tutelare: le banche-dati". The second and last day has introduced a session titled: "Catalogazione e digitalizzazione: situazione presente e prospettive future". This conference represents a great opportunity to reflect on a still open way about early printed book. A lot of proposed speeches have often reminded that forty years passed since the introduction of automation in libraries related to early printed book; a setting which deserves to be studied and discovered again, above all in the light of the latest innovations and the evolutionary process of information technology and Web. Although information technology has made remarkable progresses on creation of ad hoc software environment, as well as in the definition of "open" and flexible metalanguages to create metadata and codify in a digital way hierarchically ordered and organized text contents, there is still much to do, especially for early printed books, with the specific goal to simplify and increase the census of item data and the connection between these data (which they often elude the strict mechanism of databases and/or forms of census) and digital copies on the Web.

Nelle giornate del 14 e 15 novembre 2017, presso la Sala Stabat Mater della Biblioteca comunale dell’Archiginnasio di Bologna, si è celebrato il convegno dal titolo “Il libro antico. Limiti e prospettive dei censimenti”, organizzato dalla Regione Emilia-Romagna - Istituto per i beni artistici, culturali e naturali (IBC).
L’evento, dalla tematica assai vasta e di sicuro interesse grazie alla qualità degli interventi proposti e dei relatori intervenuti dall’Italia e dall’estero, ha riscontrato una grande affluenza da parte della comunità dei bibliotecari e degli studiosi, che hanno partecipato molto numerosi.
Per la giornata d’avvio il programma ha proposto due sedute: una seduta antimeridiana dal titolo: I fondi librari antichi: un patrimonio da conoscere, promuovere, valorizzare, tutelare; e una seduta pomeridiana dal titolo: Catalogare per conoscere, promuovere, valorizzare, tutelare: le banche-dati. La seconda e ultima giornata del convegno ha proposto una seduta dal titolo: Catalogazione e digitalizzazione: situazione presente e prospettive future.
Questo convegno non deve essere inteso come un’occasione celebrativa posta a chiusura di un programma di attività: esso rappresenta, invece, una preziosa opportunità di riflessione su un percorso a tutt’oggi aperto e incentrato sul libro antico. Molti degli interventi proposti, infatti, hanno spesso richiamato alla memoria dei presenti come siano trascorsi ben quarant’anni dall’introduzione della tematica dell’automazione in biblioteca e relativa al libro antico; uno scenario che merita di essere analizzato e riscoperto, soprattutto alla luce delle recenti innovazioni e dei processi evolutivi della tecnologia informatica e del Web.
Per quanto l’Informatica abbia fatto notevolissimi passi avanti nella creazione di ambienti software ad hoc, così come nella definizione di metalinguaggi “aperti” e flessibili per la metadatazione e la codifica digitale di contenuti testuali e gerarchicamente ordinati e strutturati, c’è ancora molto da fare, specialmente quando l’oggetto di studio sono i libri antichi, con l’obiettivo specifico di facilitare e potenziare il censimento dei dati d’esemplare e il collegamento di tali dati (che spessissimo sfuggono alle logiche stringenti dei campi a selezione fissa delle banche-dati e/o delle schede dei censimenti) alle copie digitali che popolano il Web.

ABSTRACT: With the automation of information systems and with the advent of digital libraries, norms, standards and techniques of library studies have been widely discussed, analyzed, reevaluated and reorganized. In this article the results of doctoral research, in which the Brazilian Metadata Standard for Theses and Dissertations (MTD-BR) was analyzed, is presented. This standard has been utilized in the digital Library of Theses and Dissertations Project, of the Instituto Brasileiro de Infor-mação em Ciência e Tecnologia, IBICT (Brazilian Institute for Scientific and Technological Information), with the methodology of data modeling, according to the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), which is based on the Entity-Relationship Model. It was concluded that new studies should be carried out applying this methodology to other metadata standards, even if they are analyzed with other data modeling tools, such as the object-oriented model, and considering its relationship with the guidelines, principles and instruments of library studies.

For realizing the Semantic Web vision, extensive work is underway for getting the layers of its conceived architecture ready. Given that the Ontology Layer has reached a certain level of maturity with W3C recommendations such as RDF and the OWL Web Ontology Language, current interest focuses on the Rules Layer and its integration with the Ontology Layer. Several proposals have been made for solving this problem, which does not have a straightforward solution due to various obstacles. One of them is the fact that evaluation principles like the closed-world assumption, which is common in rule languages, are usually not adopted in ontologies. Furthermore, naively adding rules to ontologies raises undecidability issues. In this paper, after giving a brief overview about the current state of the Semantic-Web stack and its components, we will discuss nonmonotonic logic programs under the answer-set semantics as a possible formalism of choice for realizing the Rules Layer. We will briefly discuss open issues in combining rules and ontologies, and survey some existing proposals to facilitate reasoning with rules and ontologies. We will then focus on description-logic programs (or dl-programs, for short), which realize a transparent integration of rules and ontologies supported by existing reasoning engines, based on the answer-set semantics. We will further discuss a generalization of dlprograms, viz. HEX-programs, which offer access to different ontologies as well as higher-order language constructs.

Data is rapidly changing how companies operate, offering them new business opportunities as they generate increasingly sophisticated insights from the analysis of an ever-increasing pool of information. Businesses have clearly moved beyond a focus on data collection to data use, but users have an inadequate model of notice and consent at the point of data collection to limit inappropriate use. An interoperable metadata-based architecture that allows permissions and policies to be bound to data, and is flexible enough to allow for changing trust norms, can help balance the tension between users and business, satisfy regulators' desire for increased transparency, and still enable data to flow in ways that provide value to all participants in the ecosystem.

This paper suggests that in the search for particular practices that escape biological
determinism historians may be better off focusing on circulating men and cultural objects – on displaced figures – as they travel and adjust to new conditions. Strangers experience intense cognitive dissonance between the innate natural conditions of their upbringing and their cognitive values, and as such, these figures work out their mental capacities and exercise free-will more powerfully than well-embedded cultural figures. To adjust to new language and cultural practices, they wrestle with fixed habits. Natives, on the other end, experience estrangement when they encounter foreign cultural objects, reinterpret and place them in a fluid web of implied meanings. Both encounters generate sensations of estrangement, forcing humans to act beyond their inborn and habitual reactions. Therefore, in this current age of physical determinism, cultural networks and moving objects carry great potential in further developing cultural history and in re-stressing and maintaining culture as the expressive realm of the collective soul.

The focal point of security is preventing unauthorized access or loss of customer or company data. Texas Instruments proposes these solution components for activating biometric security of a technological infrastructure. Methods and documented standards are being developed, as biometrics is a newcomer to the cyber security scene. The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) declared that interoperability is the cornerstone of success for biometrics and deployment requires both national and international standards. Standards have been developed but, rapid innovations coupled with the unconditional data interchange formats and technical interference, result in products that don’t meet established standards.

—This paper gives an overview about different metadata schemas used for preserving digital documents. The resources specified here gives us a head start in understanding various metadata standards. They are used for several purposes in efficient data retrieval from database. However major standards are addressed where more research work is needed to retrieve data efficiently.

Information provision over the Internet offers little by way of "intelligently" assisting users in retrieving personally relevant information. Web portals are envisaged as tools for matching users information needs in order to enhance their ability for decision-making. This paper looks at portals as a new type of intelligent decision support systems, which incorporate problem domain knowledge in order to improve efficiency in information provision. The main focus of the paper is in suggesting how certain characteristics of an intelligent decision support system can be implemented in a portal, which seeks to deliver personalised information to support efficient healthcare decision-making.

Cloud computing aims to enable end-users to easily create and use software without a need to worry about the technical implementations and the software's physical hosting location, hardware specifications, efficiency of data processing. Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage applications and services) .User can store that data remotely without maintaining local copy of data So the integrity of the data is major problem in cloud storage. Recently many works focuses on providing data dynamics and public verifiability for checking the remote integrity with the help of third party verifiers. Integrity in cloud computing is achieved by the Boneh-Lynn-Shacham (BLS) Signing algorithm that signing the data block before sending data to the cloud. To remove online burden of user we have public audit ability for cloud data storage. For that we use external audit party to check integrity of outsource data. We introduce third party auditor (TPA) for audit outsourced data without demanding local copy of user. No additional online burden for the cloud user and that can achieved by using Privacy-Preserving Public key based Homomorphic authenticator. Homomorphic authenticator efficiently supports public key based audit ability without having retrieval of the data blocks.

ROSSIO Infrastructure is building an open-access and free platform that aims to aggregate, organise and connect digital resources related to Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities located in Portuguese educational and cultural institutions. This paper aims to present ROSSIO infrastructure, the institutions involved, its main goals and the services it will provide, such as a discovery portal, exhibitions, collections and a virtual research environment. Underlying these services is a metadata aggregation approach that brings into ROSSIO the metadata on digital objects from the providing institutions. The aggregated dataset is transformed into linked data and enriched with entities from controlled vocabularies, which are defined by ROSSIO. We will detail this process, including the applications employed and how they interoperate. Finally, we will conclusively reflect on the potentialities of these services for public dissemination of science, taking into account the FAIR principles.

An important dimension of social media discourse is its searchability. A key semiotic resource supporting this function is the hashtag, a form of social tagging that allows microbloggers to embed metadata in posts. While popularly thought of as topic-markers, hashtags are able to construe a range of complex meanings in social media texts. This paper uses Halliday’s (1978) concept of linguistic metafunctions, to explore how hashtags enact three simultaneous communicative functions: marking experiential topics, enacting interpersonal relationships, and organizing text. Corpus-based discourse analysis of linguistic patterns in a 100 million word Twitter corpus is used to investigate these functions and how they enact social processes of ‘ambient affiliation’ is also considered.

In order to provide a thorough analysis of how the management of digital assets, as well as the creation of these assets, is of an importance in this digital age, I will primarily focus on three of the more elaborate themes within digital asset management.
