A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a multi-hop wireless network capable of autonomous operation. The mobility of MANET nodes can lead to frequent and unpredictable topology changes. Most MANET literature assumes that network related information of a node (such as its IP address, netmask, etc.) is configured statically, prior to the node joining the MANET. However, not all nodes have IP addresses permanently assigned to them. Such nodes rely on a centralized server and use a dynamic host configuration protocol, like DHCP [1], to acquire an IP address. Such a solution cannot be employed in MANETs due to the unavailability of any centralized DHCP server. In this paper, we first present a survey of possible solutions approaches, and discuss their limitations. Then, we present a distributed dynamic host configuration protocol designed to configure nodes in a MANET. We show that the proposed protocol works correctly and does not have the limitations of earlier approaches. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the solution through simulation experiments, and conclude with a discussion of related security issues.

This paper introduces a novel method, UDmap, to identify dynamically assigned IP addresses and analyze their dynamics pattern. UDmap is fully automatic, and relies only on application-level server logs that are already available today. We applied UDmap to a month-long Hotmail user-login trace and identified a significant number of dynamic IP addresses -more than 102 million. This suggests that the portion of dynamic IP addresses in the Internet is by no means negligible. In addition, using this information combined with a three-month Hotmail email server log, we were able to establish that 97% of mail servers setup on dynamic IP addresses sent out solely spam emails, likely controlled by zombies. Moreover, these mail servers sent out a large amount of spam -counting towards over 42% of all spam emails to Hotmail. These results highlight the importance of being able to accurately identify dynamic IP addresses for spam filtering, and we expect similar benefits of it for phishing site identification and botnet detection. To our knowledge, this is the first successful attempt to automatically identify and understand IP dynamics.

The Homework project 1 has examined redesign of existing home network infrastructures to better support the needs and requirements of actual home users. Integrating results from several ethnographic studies, we have designed and built a home networking platform providing detailed perflow measurement and management capabilities supporting several novel management interfaces. This demo specifically shows these new visualization and control interfaces ( §1), and describes the broader benefits of taking an integrated view of the networking infrastructure, realised through our router's augmented measurement and control APIs ( §2).

Petri Networks with a graphical language are based on mathematical logic which have many uses and have capability for modeling and validation of distributed systems and concurrent applications. Colored Petri Networks (CPNs) are a type of Petri Network models that are used in modeling of systems which contain discrete and scattered events. In general, CPNs are used to evaluate system performance and demonstrate the correctness of systems. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is one of the main systems of protocols special for servers that are used for dynamic allocation of IP to the network computers (clients). In this paper, we highlight to analyze the correctness and authenticity of DHCPs with the use of CPNs with using the CPN Tools and to prove the accuracy of our protocol's performance.

Cuando se intenta configurar una red de área local inalámbrica (WLAN) de forma manual con los procedimientos tradicionales más difundidos, se obtiene un fallo crítico que arroja un mensaje «error for wireless request "set encode" (8b2a)» si el punto de acceso inalámbrico (WAP) protege la red con sistemas WPA o WPA2. Esto, se debe a que los procedimientos tradicionales basan su método de configuración en redes protegidas con el antiguo sistema de protección WEP declarado obsoleto hace más de una década, a raíz de sus conocidas debilidades criptográficas. Este estudio se concentró en entender el funcionamiento exacto de las redes inalámbricas, sus protocolos, sistemas de protección y mecanismos de transmisión de datos, para obtener así, el procedimiento más adecuado para lograr una configuración propicia cuando se prescinde por completo del entorno gráfico.
