Architecture of information systems

The demand of transparency of clinical research results, the need of accelerating the process of transferring innovation in the daily medical practice as well as assuring patient safety and product efficacy make it necessary to extend the functionality of traditional trial registries. These new systems should combine different functionalities to track the information exchange, support collaborative work, manage regulatory documents and monitor the entire clinical investigation (CIV) lifecycle. This is the approach used to develop MEDIS, a Medical Device Information System, described in this paper under the perspective of the business process, and the underlining architecture. Moreover, MEDIS was designed on the basis of Health Level 7 (HL7) v.3 standards and methodology to make it interoperable with similar registries, but also to facilitate information exchange between different health information systems.

Strategic business IT (Information Technology) alignment is one of the main objectives that is achieved from the implementation of Enterprise Architecture (EA) in an organization. EA helps organizations to define architecture of business, information systems and technology that capable for aligning business strategy with IT organizations, through the development of business models, business strategy, business processes and organizations that aligned with infrastructure, applications and IT organizations. A good design of Enterprise Architecture should consider various viewpoints of IT alignment with the organization's business needs. This paper provides a solution how to design Enterprise Architecture which provides guarantee for strategic business IT alignment that is designed through the integration of SAMM component with TOGAF 9.1 metamodel.

Virtualization is seen as one of the green ITs which can help reduce infrastructure and maintenance costs. It is regarded to be a cost-effective way to dramatically reduce downtime, increase flexibility, use hardware effectively, reduce overall system complexity, and lower carbon emission. Though the popular business literature is replete with anecdotal evidence of green benefits of virtualizing servers, storage, operating systems, and in some cases entire IT infrastructure, there is little academic research on this topic in the MIS area. In this paper we provide a review of its principles, underlying technologies, major applications, and costs and benefits. We also provide implications for both practice and research, and identify some directions for future research.

This work presents a proposal for defining the Architecture of Information as a scientific discipline which has philosophical and technological foundations. It identifies the gap between Information Architecture current practices and a related theoretical model, both philosophical and scientific, to sustain that. It reviews the literature on the relationship between Information Architecture and its epistemological foundations; its relations with the Information Science and the possibility to perform a theoretical reduction of the Architecture of Information models into the Information Science models. Based on the literature review, it argues about the lack of a philosophical foundation that supports the current Information Architecture practices. To support the construction of an Architecture of Information scientific discipline, this work conducts a philosophy of science review and seeks to identify some criteria for the scientific practice characterization. As a result, this thesis proposes the philosophical, scientific and technological foundations to the Architecture of Information discipline. It proposes a philosophical postulation for a specific ontology; then it derives a phenomenology and an epistemology for Architecture of Information discipline in order to characterize a universe of discourse that allows the field delimitation of the scientific discipline. It assumes a Science concept, identifies criteria for an Architecture of Information definition as a scientific discipline and provides some fundamen- tal categories - citing Manifestation, Form, Context and Meaning, situated in the philosophical context built to the scientific Architecture of Information practice. It presents a reference model for Architecture of Information General Theory and explains a framework for implementing it. Based on the developed scientific foundation it presents a set of technological principles that guides the Information Architecture practices on building solutions and characterizes a techno- logical foundation for that discipline.

Enterprise Architecture (EA) helps organizations to define business architecture, information systems and technology capable of aligning business strategy with IT (Information Technology). Designing a good EA should look from various viewpoints IT alignment with the business needs of each organization to the architecture domain and be able to describe the components of IT business and which ones need to be reconciled , how to sync and how to measure the alignment . This research provides a solution how to design EA which guarantees business strategy and IT alignment through integration of the Strategic Alignment Maturity Model (SAMM) and TOGAF. The results of the research is the design of business, information systems and technologies architecture that ensure the alignment of business strategy and IT.

Llevaba tiempo siguiendo el borrador de la publicación efectuada por NIST Special Publication 800-207 La confianza cero es un paradigma de ciberseguridad centrado en la protección de recursos y la premisa de que la confianza nunca se otorga implícitamente, sino que debe evaluarse continuamente. La arquitectura de confianza cero está basado en el criterio end-to-end para la seguridad de los datos y los recursos de información que abarca la identidad (entidades personales y no personales), credenciales, administración de acceso, operaciones, endpoints, entornos de alojamiento e infraestructura de interconexión. El enfoque inicial de Zero Trust está en restringir los recursos a aquellos que necesitan acceder y otorgar solo los privilegios mínimos (por ejemplo, leer, escribir, eliminar) necesarios para realizar su función predeterminada. No es nada nuevo en concepto pero si en aplicación de medidas. La arquitectura tradicional de redes empresariales centrada en la defensa perimetral ha perdido peso conceptual dado que no permiten la detección y contención del movimiento lateral de los atacantes ni localizar con los sistemas de defensa los potenciales indicadores que pudieran subyacer los comportamientos sospechosos.

This thesis lays the necessary groundwork for measuring the complexity of systems architecture models. We propose a set of complexity measures, which are usable with models defined using the Object-Process Model (OPM). In order to do this, we introduce a new concept of interface complexity multiplier for compensating the hidden information at interfaces. We also define a set of complexity metrics for system architecture models. We also develop models for three different systems for mobile entertainment. The purpose of these models is to show how OPM is suitable for modeling such systems and also to provide some comparative material for complexity measurements. We use the new metrics to determine the complexity of the models of mobile entertainment systems. The thesis also contains a rigorous definition of complexity and a survey of existing complexity measurement methods.

End-to-end space communication architectures must connect system elements that may be in space, on the ground in mission operations centers, or are shared assets such as ground communications stations. End-to-end connectivity involves space communications over RF links, but also cross support services, terrestrial network circuits, and a variety of application layer protocols for commanding, telemetry, and mission operations. CCSDS has developed a large suite of interoperable, and cross-supportable, protocols for these purposes. Each of these defines a specific " layer " of functionality, such as: RF modulation, space link error coding, cross support frame delivery, or network layer routing. CCSDS has recently published a Space Communication Cross Support Architecture Requirements Document (SCCS-ARD) that describes how many of these standards fit together and how they are intended to be used. This paper provides an overview of this document, presented so as to explain the concepts so that others may use them. These concepts will be described from several key viewpoints.

In the present research work we planned the Information Architecture (IA) for the Quality Management System (QMS) of a Hospital, which allowed us to develop and implement the QUALITUS computer application. This solution translated itself in significant gains for the Hospital Unit under  study, accelerating the quality management process and reducing the tasks, the numberof documents, the information to be filled in and information errors, amongst others.

The Globus Toolkit makes it very easy and comfortable for grid users to develop and deploy grid service. As for the security mechanism, however, only static authentication and coarse-grained authorization mechanism is provided in current Globus Toolkit. In this paper we address the limitations of current security mechanism in the Globus Toolkit and propose a new architecture which provides fine-grained and flexible security mechanism. To implement this without modifying existing components, we make use of the Aspect-Oriented Programming technique.

This is the presentation from the SpaceOps 2016 conference in Deajeon, Korea, May 2016.  It is for the companion paper of the same title that describes the use of CCSDS building blocks for constructing a variety of end-to-end space data systems architectures.  It includes the following views: services, physical components, protocol stacks, and end-to-end deployments.

The development of document handling by orga-
nizations at the level of business processes and business
information systems leads to the phenomenon that the major-
ity of documents and their contents remain in semi-structured
format and definite minorities of documents are directly
mapped onto structured databases. The rapidly evolving tech-
nology on the database field provides the opportunity to
manage directly the semi-structured documents in line with
the requirements of business processes. A continuum of pos-
sible document formats may exist in business environments.
The documents can be categorized by the organization of
the underlying data collections and according to the neces-
sity and capability of data included in documents as whether
wholly or partially is to be structured. The most modern data-
base technology yields tools for handling and retrieving data
making use of semi-structured and unstructured data. Our
proposed approach (1) on one hand provides a theoretical
framework for modeling IS to shape into some structure,
(2) on the other hand yields guidance for design method
to employ it for practical application with the extension of
specific elementary models. The proposed modeling method
that places the emphasis onto the documents and their symbi-
otic life with processes helps in understanding the behavior
of most modern information systems. As a result, the com-
bination of document-centric modeling and the enterprise
architecture approach gives an opportunity for a unified mod-
eling approach that keeps an eye on Conway’s thesis that
states that software architecture congruent with the structure
of development team, and this statement may be paraphrased
that the overall document structure may reflect the structure
of the specific organization.

It is for the companion paper of the same title that describes the use of a SysML method for accurately modeling complex systems-of-system interfaces. The focus in this presentation is on the use of the method for modeling space systems interfaces, including system composition, services, data exchanges, protocol stacks, and protocol behaviors.

Recent research in EIS shows that their success is hampered by data problems. This paper identifies the data problems associated with EIS and their causes based on past research. Primarily, two classes of data problems -- organizational and technical -- are found. Different approaches to solve these problems are discussed. It is concluded that information systems architecture (ISA) has the potential to solve these problems and to fulfill information requirements of an organization and its personnel in a timely and comprehensive manner. The implications of this research are discussed and future research directions are identified.
