UNIUYO Journal of Communication Studies, UJCS, 2017
This study appraises the methodological and theoretical approaches commonly employed in political communication studies. It adopted content analysis as a research method to examine 160 political communication-related articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals published between 2005 and 2015. It was found that, overall, political communication researchers seldom employed mixed methods (6.3%), while they seemed to prefer quantitative designs (75.0%) to qualitative approaches (18.8%). Specifically, while under quantitative orientations, researchers employed survey (43.3%) and content analysis (35.4%) more frequently than other methods, they used interviews (39.4%) and case studies (27.3%) more frequently than other qualitative methods. Also, the study reveals that in political communication studies, application of theories has gained prominence with the framing and the agenda-setting theories topping the list of commonly used theories. The trends here suggest frequent use of theories, but extreme paradigmatic preference among political communication scholars with few cases of quant-qual complementarity. The study, therefore, concludes that copious use of theories to drive studies is a positive trend, but political communication researchers should be encouraged to be pragmatic and embrace mixed methods because a single methodological approach may not always be adequate in solving most research problems.
Sociolinguistic patterns and processes of convergence and divergence in Spanish. Spanish , 2020
This paper offers a sociolinguistic analysis of the consonants (s) and (d) in the coda position in the city of Madrid, within the framework of the Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish from Spain and America (PRESEEA). The purpose is to illustrate how varieties of southern Castilian Spanish and those from the central and northern Peninsula converge and diverge, taking into consideration the social, political, and economic parameters that affect said processes. The diversity of patterns that coexist in the Madrid speech community reflects the city’s historic social complexity, the varied geographical origins of its migrant population, the interests that motivate each community of practice, as well as other circumstances that influence the direction of change. The analysis of (s) and (d) in coda illustrates the way in which the dynamics of variation and change in Madrid fluctuate between two poles: standardization and regionalization, the same two axes around which the community's sociolinguistic patterns revolve.

The region of the middle Solimões River, as it is known from its confluence with the Rio Negro rivers, gathers in the city of Tefé, a regional economic Centre, and is the headquarters of the archaeological research Centre of the Mamirauá Institute for Sustainable Development, which in recent years has expanded its investigations for protected areas that make up a mosaic of indigenous lands, units of conservation, and protection of biodiversity associated with the ways of life of traditional populations and their sustainable practices of exploitation and management of resources. The research aims to report the field experience during surveys of archaeological sites in communities in the Middle Solimões region, from the researchers' perception, along with the images and speech records of community members. We understand that researching in far-fluting areas of the Amazon is challenging; however, field experiences have taught us how rewarding it is to understand the past with people in the present.
Comparative Education, 2011
In sub-Saharan Africa, education conducted through a European language is associated with low school achievement. Both teachers and learners may often not be fluent enough to use the language as a medium of instruction. In these circumstances, both also make use of a common African language. They switch between two languages in the plenary classroom and-less commonly-learners talk in the African language when working in groups. These uses of African languages are often condemned by authorities and teachers feel uneasy about them. In other parts of the world, bilingual education is often planned, supported by authorities, underpinned by theory and its procedures well-defined. In the absence of such planning, teachers in Africa tend to generate their own creative bilingual practices. In this article we describe the extent to which this occurs, the forms it takes and the possible educational value these practices may have. We discuss the attitudes of teachers and authorities to the use of two languages. The article focuses in particular on the way low learner ability in the medium of instruction limits talk and necessitates bilingual interaction, and outlines ways in which teachers can make adjustments to the management of bilingualism in the classroom which facilitate learning in a European language. It emphasises the relative absence in African teacher education of the specialist pedagogy which learners with low ability in the medium of instruction require and proposes that bilingual education be formally recognised and promoted by authorities.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the success of Asian art around the world led to the development of Asian-inspired works overseas, such as European japanning and chinoiserie. While japanning (the use of tinted varnish in imitation of Asian urushi lacquer) and chinoiserie (decoration in Chinese style) are the best known of the Western phenomena, they were neither the only nor the earliest examples. Moreover, Asian art widely circulated in Spanish America, thanks to the direct trade via the Manila galleons. From the early sixteenth century on, art from New Spain (Mexico) tended to develop cross-cultural forms, such as feather-work (plumaria) and corn stalk cane sculpturing. From the 1600s on the availability of Chinese and Japanese works there led to the development of a wide variety of Asian-inspired productions, which circulated widely in New Spain and also to a lesser extent in Spain. These new products differed both from the Asian originals and European Asian-inspired works, and contributed significantly to the expansion of artistic horizons at the time.
