I explore children's rights starting from films and moving to everyday experience of my self and my students intertwining from the first moment personal narrative with theoretical knowledge offering a hands on approach
2023
Children's rights have gained importance and recognition in international discourse since 1989, when the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was ratified. The ability of film to convey complex narratives and emotional truths while overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers has made it a potent advocacy medium in recent years. Through the use of visual storytelling, filmmakers can effectively draw attention to child rights issues that may otherwise go unnoticed. The use of film not only raises awareness but also fosters empathy, encourages dialogue, and inspires action among diverse audiences. Against this backdrop, this chapter focuses on the concept of "film language" as a means of reporting child rights, exploring how filmmakers employ narrative techniques, visuals, sound, and editing to convey critical messages about children's experiences and rights. The language of film engages audiences on an emotional level, making the issues more relatable and prompting societal reflection and action. Additionally, the study examines the ethical responsibility of filmmakers in representing children, advocating for practices that prioritize authenticity, respect, and the empowerment of young voices. The chapter reveals that mainstreaming of child rights perspectives into film has the potential to catalyze change by shaping public narratives, influencing policy decisions, and promoting accountability among stakeholders. This study seeks to critically analyze the role of film in highlighting child rights, assessing its effectiveness as an advocacy tool, and identifying best practices for filmmakers committed to social justice. By understanding the impact of film language in reporting child rights, the author aims to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the responsibilities of media creators in fostering a just and equitable world for children. Ultimately, this chapter underscores the importance of film as a vital tool for advocacy, urging collaboration among filmmakers, child rights organizations, and policymakers to enhance visibility and ensure the protection and promotion of children's rights through the language of film.
Policy Futures in Education, 2018
The working thesis of my latest research is that cinema can offer a viewer something of a ‘re-education in education’. In the case of policymakers and researchers in the field of education, this means looking again at the reality of the conceptual phenomena with which we occupy ourselves in writing to see whether the two groups are aligned. This article will first look at how the figure of the child is commonly constructed as an object of knowledge within policy and philosophical discourse, suggesting that this approach affirms frameworks in which it is possible to know what a child is, but may fail to do justice to the child of our ordinary experience. I then turn to a discussion of some of Iran’s so-called ‘children’s films’, exploring how their presentation of a world, and the representation of children within that world, allow for a re-education in the lived reality of children. It is suggested that this aesthetic turn in observing the child's behaviour may encourage a more ...

This paper contains an introduction to a selection of papers across social sciences and humanities, based on empirical explorations and theoretical conceptualizations. Authors highlight the issues of parental roles, parental styles, child and family positioning in the family and society. The lens of children’s rights and participatory approaches is also discussed. Authors focus on diverse practices in parenting, different approaches to children’s agency and freedom of choice, family as a negotiated space mediated by culture, children’s position in family and society, life chances and wellbeing, critical approaches to children’s rights perspectives, early intervention, socio-political context, finally Freire’s and Korczak’s pedagogies.
The Module will introduce and critically examine the concept of children's rights in international human rights law, focusing on the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Module introduces classic and contemporary theories of childhood and human rights, covers the philosophical foundations of children's rights and offers a systematic investigation of the Convention. The module locates the debates about children's rights within broader theoretical questions concerning childhood, law and society.
Columbia Human Rights Law Review
Although the Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history, children’s rights are still seen in many circles as novel and quaint ideas but not serious legal theory. The reality, however, is that the realization of children’s rights is vital not only for childhood but for individuals’ entire lives. Similarly, although the books children read and have read to them are a central part of their childhood experience, so too has children’s literature been ignored as a rights-bearing discourse and a means of civic socialization. We argue that children’s literature, like all narratives that contribute to our moral sense of the world, help children construct social expectations and frame an understanding of their own specific rights and responsibilities. Arguing that literature is a source of law for children, we explore children’s literature with a view to examining what children learn about their own rights, the rights of others, and the ro...
