The Kingdom Beyond the Hill

Armed only with a pen and two dice, you will embark on this epic Fantasy Gamebook! 

Normally, all the inhabitants of Brinthal look forward to the great festival held on the winter solstice. But this year they get a huge fright! Albin, the little son of the dairymen, has disappeared during the festivities. It seems that the Silent People have kidnapped him. Are the spirits upset about something? Or is it a mean prank? In this Advent Calendar game book, you'll take on the role of a Ranger and try to help your home village. Will you be able to save the little boy in time?

The Kingdom Beyond the Hill is a solo fantasy gamebook within the tradition of gamebooks like Lone Wolf, Fighting Fantasy and Fabled Lands. I have kept the rules very simple. All you really need for playing is a pencil and two six-sided dice (2d6). When you have to take a test, whether in combat or in some other situation like climbing or swimming, you roll the dice. Then you add a value from the character sheet (attribute and/or skill). The final result indicates whether you passed the test or not.

The story takes place in a total of three locations: in the village, in the forest and under the hill. Three location charts serve as a kind of playing field and help to keep an eye on the progress of the adventure. After you have explored one location sufficiently, you switch to the next one and continue playing there.

In addition to the traditional way of playing, there is another exciting way to experience this adventure – as an Advent calendar! The text and mechanics are specifically designed  for you to play a part of the story every day from December 1 to 24.

I believe that both newbies and experienced roleplayers will enjoy The Kingdom Beyond the Hill. I would especially recommend the adventure to children of 12 years and older.
