To sum, under the multifaceted approach of Israel's Regime Untangled, different accounts of both democracy and Israel coexist such that tensions and contradictions are acknowledged but not resolved, binarism is rejected, and complexities are embraced. Israel is both democratic and not democratic at the same time along various dimensions and across its different zones of control. While the book focuses on Israel, the insights drawn from it exceed this specific case and suggest broader implications for democracy and the crises it faces.

When Russia launched its full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, he began recording daily messages to Ukrainian society and reaching out to international audiences through live addresses. This paper analyzes Zelens′kyi’s speeches during the first 50 days of the intensified war. It examines the agenda-setting and framing methods, honed by his television experience, that he used to reach audiences, as well as their content. It suggests that these speeches made Ukraine’s narrative dominant in international media, dispersing the information fog Russia was trying to create whereby Ukraine needed to be “de-Nazified,” neutralized, and kept in Russia’s sphere of influence. They also helped consolidate Ukrainian society and strengthen international assistance.

Februar 2006 erschien die erste Ausgabe, damals zu den Folgen der Orangen Revolution. Das Editorial, das diese Ausgabe eröffnete, ist nach wie vor aktuell: »[d]ie Ukraine steht derzeit politisch und wirtschaftlich an einem Wendepunkt«. So befindet sich die Ukraine auch im Jahr 2016 im gesellschaftlichen Umbruch. Der Euromaidan, die Krim-Annexion und der andauernde Konflikt im Donbass haben die Ukrainer gravierend geprägt und das Land wesentlich verändert. Niemand konnte alle diese Ereignisse vorhersehen. So schnell und unerwartet sind sie passiert. Die Ukraine-Analysen haben aber diese und andere Ereignisse für Sie systematisch und regelmäßig dokumentiert und analysiert. Wir wollen komplexe Zusammenhänge und Herausforderungen allgemein verständlich und kompetent für Sie darstellen. Abstract: This paper reframes conventional views of Ukraine by showing how global trends of cultu... more Abstract: This paper reframes conventional views of Ukraine by showing how global trends of cultural and media convergence are influencing its identity. It looks at how the country's media system developed after independence, particularly television, and how this reveals the ongoing struggle to define what it means to be Ukrainian. Media representations illustrate that three visions coexist: a cosmopolitan, pro-Western one which embraces the forces of globalization; a residual Soviet Ukrainian one that is open to change but has a strong cultural affinity to Russia; and a new/ old Ukrainian identity that draws on deep-rooted local (national) values, which coincide with universal ones such as democracy, with a contemporary flavor and without a Russian dimension. The papers were written before november 2013, they reflect the situation and the opinions of the authors of the Yanukovych era, before Majdan. The events of 2013–2014 indicate that in the 23 years of independence (1991–2013) deep changes occurred in Ukrainian society. The fluidity of the situation condemns any answer to remain tentative and to be contradicted by the facts of the next day.
