The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Mocha” (pronounced as “Mokha”) over central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 13kmph during past six hours and lay centered at 8.30am today over the same region near latitude 13.6°N and longitude 88.2°E, about 530km west-northwest of Port Blair, 950km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and 870km southsouthwest of Sittwe (Myanmar). The cyclone would reach its peak intensity around Saturday evening, the IMD has said, adding that it is likely to cross southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between Cox's Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar), close to Sittwe (Myanmar) around Sunday noon with maximum sustained wind speed of 140-150 kmph gusting to 165kmph. Rainfall at most places in Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and southern Assam and heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely on Saturday, and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places of these states on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday that cyclone Mocha over southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to cause 'heavy' to 'very heavy' rainfall in Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, southern Assam and parts of Manipur and adjoining areas on Saturday and Sunday. The IMD said that the cyclonic storm is likely to move north, north-eastwards and intensify further into an extremely severe cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal during Friday night. (IANS)
IMD Kolkata issues red alert for fishermen
The IMD Kolkata has issued a red alert for fishermen considering the very severe cyclonic storm Mocha. The IMD has said that due to formation of very severe cyclonic storm over central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and its movement towards Bangladesh and Myanmar coast, fishermen are advised not to venture into the deep sea of north Bay of Bengal between May 12 and May 14.
West Bengal officials said that Tarpaulins, drinking water pouches, milk powder, dry food, baby food and medicines have been sent to the safe shelters at the low lying coastal areas of Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts and some areas of the Sundarbans.
Though the weather office has predicted that Cyclone Mocha will dodge past West Bengal, we have taken all precautionary measures in case there is any change. West Bengal govt takes precautionary measures
West Bengal government has taken precautionary measures to combat possible devastation by Cyclone Mocha and has shifted residents of low lying and coastal areas of the state to safe shelters, an official said on Friday.
The weather department said it was expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
India's Meteorological Department said the storm was moving northward with a speed 9 kph. On Friday, it was centred more than 1,000 kilometres southwest of Cox's Bazar and 930 kilometres southwest of Sittwe in Myanmar.

Cyclone intensifies into very severe storm
"The SCS “Mocha" intensified into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, lay centered at 0530 hours IST of 12th May 2023 over Central adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal near lat 13.2N & long 88.1E, about 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair(sic)," tweets IMD.
The weather office has asked fishermen, ships, boats and trawlers not to venture into central and northeast Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea till Sunday.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has also issued an official statement that its units have been placed on high alert amid the warning of the IMD for cyclonic storm Mocha.
The Cyclonic storm is likely to recurve and on the 12th of May evening, it will intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm over the central Bay of Bengal. On 13th May it will take peak intensity. The system is under continuous surveillance.
