Thanks to the funding from the Borough, Bankside & Walworth Community Council Community Fund the Walworth Society is holding an event celebrating the story of East Street over the weekend of Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June.
Based from our pop-up stall in East Street market, the Walworth Society will be giving away our specially produced leaflets which tell the story of the market from its humble beginnings in the fields along what was then The Kent Road, to its time on the Walworth Rd itself and then from 1927 on East Street. The story will be told through the prism of three important institutions, The Masons Arms Public House, The East Street Baptist Church and the Wallington Family who have been traders on the market since before the Second World War.
This weekend event is the culmination of a nine month project by the Walworth Society designed to encourage people to share their stories of Walworth. Because further funding has been awarded it will also act as the start of our project to create a wider Walworth heritage walk and book in a second phase.
The event is open between 0900 - 1500 on Saturday or 1000 - 1400 on Sunday.
