University of Minnesota Feature Twirler Audition Information
Thank you for your interest in the open University of Minnesota Feature Twirler position!
Auditions will take place on Saturday April 19th at TCF Bank Stadium.
To register for an audition, please email Aimee Barmore-Kamrath and Britney Manning at [email protected] and [email protected] with your contact information, twirling resume, your audition video and a twirling photograph. Additionally, please include an essay in 500 words or less, telling us why you would like to be a part of the University of Minnesota Marching Band.

The application form and a picture of yourself must be submitted no later than March 15, 2014. This helps the directors and twirling committee in identifying and remembering your application at audition. As soon as your application is submitted, a phone or video interview will be set-up and take place before audition selections. All applicants must have applied and been accepted to the University of Minnesota as an undergraduate student.
Audition Day Information:
- Bring your audition music in the form of a compact disc or as a track on an iPod, iPad, iPhone, or an Android phone that can be plugged into a larger speaker system via an auxiliary jack.
- Prepare a 3-5 minute routine that incorporates 1, 2, and 3-baton
- Be ready to perform an improvised routine to a U of M fight song of the staff's choice. You will have the whole field to perform it and should use at least 30 yards to show field movement and strutting capabilities
- Be ready to answer interview questions in front of the twirling committee
- Wear appropriate clothing - you are performing for the students of the University of Minnesota Marching Band, its directors and the twirling committee. SHOW US YOUR BEST SELF including SHOWMANSHIP!
**A back-up option of your music on a different media device is always recommended in case there are technical difficulties**
Selection is based on the following:
- Twirling Skill
- Body Control
- Routine and Difficulty Content
- Technique and Execution
- Showmanship and Presentation
- Improvisation
- Interview
The level of twirling difficulty and technique is the most important factor in the audition. The University of Minnesota Feature Twirler position is aimed to highlight well-developed technique with a twirler who can adapt their skills to a variety of musical styles and fit in with the Pride of Minnesota atmosphere as part of the band in attitude and membership. Dynamic routines will highlight strengths and incorporate a variety of turns and catches, toss illusions, highlight performance abilities, multiple baton work, and your maximum potential of difficulty.
**Fire Batons will NOT be allowed at the audition, however, they can be used in performances at the University of Minnesota on certain occasions**
Audition Requirements Applicable to All Candidates
- All prospective candidates must be able to audition in person on campus, at the University of Minnesota Marching Band Drum Major Auditions in April 2014. No exceptions.
- All prospective candidates must meet the applicable eligibility requirements described below by the date of the audition. Eligibility requirements must be verifiable by the University of Minnesota Marching Band Office.
- All prospective candidates must file an application form with the University of Minnesota Marching Band Twirling Committee by March 15, 2014.
Eligibility Requirements and Limitations
If you are interested in auditioning for the Feature Twirler position, use the information provided to determine the requirements and limitations that are applicable to you. High school students, current University of Minnesota students, or transfer students are eligible to audition for the Feature Twirler position.

The 2014 University of Minnesota Feature Twirler will be announced at the Audition.
