The Waterbury region is a center for exceptional opportunities for anyone who wishes to pursue a higher education. Within the region, one will find universities, community colleges and technical institutes offering programs in both undergraduate and graduate studies. More than 40 institutions of higher education, including Yale, Wesleyan, Quinnipiac University, UCONN, Fairfield University, University of Hartford and the four campuses of Connecticut State University, are also located about an hour from Waterbury.

Naugatuck Valley Community Technical College: a two-year public college, offering Associate degrees and credit certificates in a number of fields such as: allied health, nursing and physical education, arts and humanities, behavioral and social sciences, business, engineering technologies and math and science. Credits earned at NVCT are transferable toward a Baccalaureate degree. The college offers cooperative education and distance learning programs.

University of Connecticut - Waterbury Campus currently provides core curriculum and electives equivalent to the first two years of requirements at the University of Connecticut in Storrs (UCONN). The Waterbury Campus also offers a Bachelor of General Studies through a part-time program. Beginning in 2001, the Waterbury Campus will offer Baccalaureate and Master degree programs in business administration. In the fall os 2003, the school moved to its new downtown Waterbury site on East Main Street.

The University of Bridgeport's Waterbury Center offers the M.S. in Education Teaching Internship program. More than 300 certified teachers have attended courses at the University in Waterbury. The majority of students attend classes part-time while employed in schools throughout Connecticut.
