First of all, let's face facts. Terry McMillan's "Waiting to Exhale" just might be the most popular black-girl book ever. At one point it was impossible to step outside without seeing the volume, its color-splashed dust jacket instantly recognizable, being clutched fervently and rather defiantly by businesswomen on the T, suffering dog-ears at the hands of male-mystified schoolgirls or winking from neatly ordered briefcases or cluttered gym bags. Phone lines buzzed as particularly juicy snippets were exchanged and amen'ed.
