Adelaide and Adelaide Plains Wine Region
Vineyards and cellar doors right in the heart of the city
A great place to start is the National Wine Centre of Australia. It’s on North Terrace in Adelaide and has grape vines growing around it. You can taste wine from all over Australia and get ready to “take on” South Australia's wine regions.
For a look into Adelaide’s early years of wine producing, you must take the tour of Magill Estate. It’s the birthplace of the legendary Penfolds Wines. Indulge and stay for a divine lunch or dinner in the award-winning Magill Estate restaurant.
City venues
Wine bars and cellar doors are located throughout Adelaide city. You can have a wine adventure even on the shortest stay in South Australia.
The Adelaide Plains is about half an hour drive north of Adelaide. Decades ago, Mediterranean and Asian immigrants settled in the area. They continue to cultivate the land which is full of rows of vines, greenhouses, commercially grown flowers, herbs and vegetables. Visit the Adelaide Central Market to see where all of this wonderful produce goes.
Wineries
The Adelaide Plains is a wine growing area, so you can’t visit the wineries. Keep an eye out for Primo Estate and Dominic Versace wines in local restaurants and bottle shops.
Grape varieties grown on the Adelaide Plains are Shiraz, Colombard (reportedly the best in Australia), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon. Italian red varieties include Barbera (found in Chianti), Sangiovese and Nebbiolo.
