OAKLAND, Calif. -- The injury situation at small forward is nearing crisis stage for the Mavericks after they found out Devean George has cartilage damage in his right knee that could require surgery. George was injured Wednesday at Portland and the leg stiffened up quickly after he departed the game in the fourth quarter. It is not known what sort of procedure will be required, but team physician Dr. T.O. Souryal will join the team in Los Angeles on Saturday to conduct a thorough exam on George. This sort of injury typically requires some sort of surgery to repair the cartilage. The Mavericks said there didn't appear to be any ligament damage. George, who referred comment after today's shootaround to athletic trainer Casey Smith, suffered the injury when he was on a fast break and Portland guard Steve Blake fouled him to prevent an easy basket. "It's tough,'' said Dirk Nowitzki. "It kind of looked like an awkward play. He had a little breakaway and the guy was just trying to foul him and I guess he came down awkward. It's obviously a little frustrating, but injuries are part of the game for every team. You can't complain about it.'' The injury means Antoine Wright and Gerald Green are the only two true healthy swingmen on the team. Coach Rick Carlisle said he would experiment with other alternatives as Josh Howard and Jerry Stackhouse remain sidelined. "All the sudden we're thinner than we were,'' he said. "But we got Gerald and James Singleton who's played some three for us, so we're going to have to make it work. And (Jason) Kidd has played some three for us defensively.'' CommentsE-mail entry: |
Somebody call Keith Van Horn!
Hate it for George but this should give Gerald sometime on the floor and also opens the door for what I think could be a great lineup with James Singleton at the 3 spot... That allows the Mavs to match up with any team once Josh gets back and gets Singleton on the floor with other scorers so he can use his athleticism in more space.
Hallelujah!
Happiness for an injury? No wonder you blogged under an alias.
Finally!
this really sucks. george is a smart, veteran role player, and the only guy on the mavs bench who can actually guard kobe.
We're going to miss Devean's defense. Fans and critics may say what they wants but George can defend.
But offensively he just didn't do much and that's what we need. Now we'll have more offense on the floor with Gerald Green. Green will make mistakes though. But he'll play his heart out. It's a win-lose situation but in the end I think we need some more offensive help than defensive.
no one on dallas can guard kobe, let alone really anyone in the league.
I'll shut Kobe down!
Shane Battier can.
Anyone knows how long this type of injury (Devean Georges Injury) will keep him away from the court?
Too true Damian. And as for all of the people who are in favor of giving George minutes, and against playing younger, more athletic players like Gerald Green, remember that Green's contract expires at the end of the year, and if he's not getting the minutes, he's probably going to leave. Thus, the youth exodus of the Dallas Mavericks will continue. Carlisle needs to stop playing his nasty three-guard lineup (which he hinted to in the quotes) and needs to start developing players who could really contribute and take us somewhere if just given the chance. Sure, mistakes will be made, but playing next to veterans like Kidd, Terry, and Dirk, a younger player has a lot of potential to learn from them and get easy shots.
George is out???? OMG We are now going to definately lose every single game. He is the heart and soul of this team let alonne the friggen NBA!!!!
Really? Who cares if he is out. He has done nothing all year or all his Mavs career.
GO MAVS! WE CAN STILL HOLD IT DOWN WITH OR WITHOUT GOERGE
Wow It's the best news of this season. Now we need Dumpier to get hurt too.
Hey JJ
Too bad Dampier would never get hurt because he would never play hard enough. Have you seeing him walking up and down the court, seems to me he was taking a leisure walk in the park.
Great news. Now we can see more of Singleton. He can play a 2 spot. Some coaches are so typical if you are labeled a 3 you can't play a 2 ... it's so dumb
Sorry to hear it because Devean is underappreciated. He's a vary smart role player who is consistently productive esp. on defense.
If only the Mavs could put Devean's head into Gereal Green's Body. Singleton is also a good stand in but maybe not as much of a swingman as George.
I would assign D. Armstrong to eat & sleep with Green till he plays like he knows what is goin g on defensively. Maybe this becomes a breakout opportunity for Gerald.
Yeah I'm happy about it John h. (I doubt that's your real last name) because that means more time for Singleton and more time for Green.
What has George done so well this year in your mind that warrants him getting any minutes?
George might be a great guy but should not even be in the nba. Cant shoot, cant drive, and defense is overrated.
Some people respond so stupid and ignorance shows. Now why would a person with any kind of sense, be happy that someone has an injury, when their profession is their job? Devean George, please get well and be encouraged. See you at the game Saturday!
Yeah we need Keith Van Horn...He help the mavs get to the finals
My name is John Holland, you ignorant dolt. I have never understood why Carlisle gives Carlisle minutes, but wishing bodily injury on a man is malevolent and reflective of who you are, not me.
You may be happy, but you're a coward.
That would be Carlisle gives George minutes, and you're still a coward.
G-Money (Green) is instant offense. The Mavs have had issues shutting down teams all season. If you can't stop anyone, out score them. This team is old and we need to get younger. You see what Oklahoma's youth did to us.
Hey John Holland my name is Matt Reed and I'm far from being a coward and now that you have my name I hope you look me up someday so I can kick your ace.
Another thing you idiot...I've never wished injury on anyone. I am simply excited that George won't be getting any minutes. Obviously you like go over the top to bring attention to yourself but all it does is make you look like a jerk.
Now you threaten an ass kicking. What a fraud.
And you did say you were glad George got injured. That's over the top.
And I'll stand by what I said in comparison to your dronings any day. It's malevolent to exclaim hallelujah at the news of a severe injury to a man. You should show some shame.
