AKON TO PERFORM IN DAR - - 18/5/2006
Top-selling Hip Hop recording artist Akon will be performing in concert in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Friday, 16th of June 2006 at Diamond Jubilee Hall.
This will be Akons first appearance in East Africa, though not his first experience on the continent. He grew up in Senegal before moving to the United States with his family.
East Africa Radio and East Africa Television are proud to welcome home a son of Africa.
Aliaune Thiam, also known as Akon, is the son of Mor Thiam, a jazz percussionist. After settling in the state of New Jersey, Akon himself learned to play several different percussion instruments before discovering Hip Hop. He eventually became a singer, songwriter and producer.
Akons debut album, entitled Trouble, has sold 4 million units worldwide. He has released several hit singles, including: Locked Up, Ghetto, Lonely, Bananza (Belly Dancer) and Pot of Gold.
East African artists will also be performing at the concert. These artists include Suma Lee and Noorah from Tanzania, Ngoni and Bebe Cool from Uganda, and Nonini and Necessary Noize from Kenya.
This concert is being organized by East Africa Radio, East Africa Television and James Kinsey of Dusk Til Dawn Entertainment, in association with Celtel Tanzania.
