Paola Valentini

Paola Valentini is nowadays Full Professor at the University of Turin. She worked at University of Florence (Italy) for 22 years, where she teached Film History, TV and Radio History and Theory and analysis of film and TV languages.
Her researches focus on both on television and film history and on the interactions between different media. She studies Italian television history, leading attention to historic, cultural and textual analysis of TV programs. It is also long time that her researches have focused on sound evolution and changes in contemporary movies and particularly on film sound and voice in Italian cinema from the 30ies to the 70ies and the interactions created by sound between cinema, radio, television and industry of sound and music.
She is author of the monographs Il suono nel cinema. Storia, teoria e tecniche (Marsilio, 2006), Presenze sonore. Il passaggio al cinema sonoro in Italia tra cinema e radio (Le Lettere, 2007), Televisione e gioco. Quiz e società italiana (Archetipo, 2013) and Divi allo specchio. Intrecci tra televisione e cinema nell'Italia del dopoguerra (2021).
She writes on several journals: «Bianco e nero», «Comunicazioni sociali», «Cinema & Storia», «La Valle dell’Eden», «Immagine» (Associazione Italiana per le Ricerche di Storia del Cinema), etc. From 2001 to 2006 she was part of Editorial staff of International Film Studies Journal «Cinema & Cie». From 2006 till 2012 she created and she wrote SegnoSound, a column on contemporary film sound, in «Segnocinema» Film journal.
From 2015 she is member of the Scientific Board of «L’Avventura. International Journal of Italian Film and Media Landscapes».
In 2003 she was part of Editorial board for radio emission Memoria del tubo. Storia parlata della televisione, a history television program aired by RAI Radiotre and she collaborated to encyclopedic project La Radio (Garzanti, Milano 2003). From 2006 to 2009 she was researcher for Italy in European Project History in European Television (directed by Pierre Sorlin), involving Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Spain and Great Britain, sponsored by Regione Emilia-Romagna and Istituto Storico Parri Emilia-Romagna of Bologna. She takes part to the research project on “Italian cinema History” Scuola nazionale di cinema (CSC) and she wrote essays on several of its volumes.
In 2008 she was Lehrbeauftragte / Lecturer at Universität Innsbruck for the course “Italowestern- Theorieteil des Projektseminars” (24 class hours) in the event “Faccia a faccia con l’Italowestern” organized by Leopold-Franzens Universität Innsbruck, Italien Zentrum and Filmfestivals Innsbruck.
From 2013 to 2021 she was President of Master’s degree course in Scienze dello spettacolo (Performing Arts) at University of Florence.
From 2006 to 2023 she is member of Teaching Board of PhD in Arts and Performing Arts (former PhD in Performing Arts) of University of Florence and in 2013 she was head of curriculum in Performing arts.
