Non-Sega versions

Radical Rex is a platform game developed by Beam Software and published by Activision for the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Mega-CD. The Mega Drive version was only released in North America and Europe, while the Mega-CD version was only released in North America. The two versions are identical except the Mega-CD version has a CD audio soundtrack.

Story

The sinister Skriitch, a magical mammal who speaks in rhymes, wants to make the dinosaurs extinct so that mammals can rule the world. He has placed a hex on most of the dinosaurs in the land that has placed them under his control. He also kidnaps Rex's girlfriend Rexanne. Rex has evaded the curse and must now defeat Skriitch and save dino-kind.

Gameplay

The game is a platformer. Players play as Rex, a fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus rex. Rex is moved around with Left and Right. He jumps with C and crouches with Down. He can climb vines with Up and Down. When underwater, he swims by moving the D-Pad in any direction. Rex can use a skateboard in some levels, which moves automatically. He can jump on the skateboard with C and ditch the skateboard with B. Holding C while airborne on the skateboard does a spin trick.

Rex attacks enemies by breathing fire with B, which stuns them momentarily. He can then kick them with A, which defeats them. Stunned enemies can often be used as platforms to reach higher places. He can increase the potency of his fire breath by an finding item; at higher levels, his fire breath can defeat enemies without needing to kick them. He can use his fire breath when jumping or crouching. Rex can also roar with Up+A, which attacks every enemy on screen simultaneously. Roaring diminishes his roar bar, which is replenished by finding an item. His fire breath and roar bars reset at the start of each stage.

Rex has a life bar that is reduced whenever he takes damage from enemies. It starts each stage at full and can be replenished by finding an item. If he loses his entire life bar, he loses a life. Some stage hazards, such as spikes and lava pits, instantly kill Rex regardless of his remaining life. He can also die if he runs out of air when underwater. If Rex loses all his lives, the game ends, though it can be continued as long as the player has continues remaining. The player can earn extra continues through the bonus stages, which can be entered by collecting 80 eggs in a single stage.

There is a two-player mode where two players can take turns playing. There are three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, and Hard).

Bonus stages

Bonus stages are entered by collecting 80 or more eggs in any stage (except the last). Each bonus stage corresponds to a particular stage. The bonus stage is somewhat similar to Pengo. It is an overhead maze where Rex must collect all of the eggs to win an extra continue. Rex instantly loses the stage if he touches one of the roaming dinosaurs.

Rex can be moved with the D-Pad; he faces in the direction he was last moved. The green blocks can be pushed by standing adjacent to them and pushing A, B, or C while facing them. Green blocks travel in a line when pushed and explode when they impact something; if they hit an enemy dinosaur, an egg, or another green block, both are destroyed. If Rex destroys an egg, he can no longer successfully collect all of the eggs for a continue.
