History
[eedit | eedit soorce]The name o the oreeginal veelage o the Volsci is uncertain; Ecetra or Fortinum are possible suggestions.
In the Middle Ages it wis a fief o various Roman baronal faimilies, such as the Colonna, the Orsini an the Borghese.
The modren veelage wis cried Monte Fortino till 1873. It awes its present name tae a unpruiven identification o the steid wi the auncient Volscian Artena, destroyed in 404 BC. Anither Artena, which belangit tae the destrict o Caere, an lay atween it an Veii, wis destroyed in the period o the keengs, & its steid is unkent.
Main sichts
[eedit | eedit soorce]On the muntain (600 m) abuin the veelage are the fine remains o the fortifications o a ceety biggit in the 6t or 5t century BC, in cyclopean blocks o local limestane. Athin the waws are traces o biggins, an a massive terrace which supportit some edifice o importance.
Ither sichts include the Palazzo Borghese (17t century), an the kirks o Santa Maria delle Letizie, Santa Croce, Santo Stefano Protomartire an San Francesco.
