George Washingon was the first president of the United States (1789-1797), Commander in Chief of the Revolutionary Army, leader of the Constitutional Convention, member of Continental Congress (Virginia), a farmer, surveyor, art collector, amateur architect and landscape designer.
Washington collected both fine and decorative art and his collection included work and copies of work by, among others, Jean-Antoine Houdon, Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley, and John Trumbull.
Washington's wife was Martha Dandridge Custis Washington (1731-1802).
