Specification of Letters Patent. Application med November =1, 1909. fierial No. 525,647.
Patented May 3,19'10.
To all whom it ma/ytoncem:
' Be it known that I, THEODORE WIEDER- sEIM,Jr., acitizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Display-Oard,-of which the following is a specification.
invention relates to a new and useful dis ay card wherein I provide a plurality of eaves or sections having representations thereon said leaves 'or sections being so arranged with respect to each other that, when properly manipulated, they are caused to assume such positions with respect to each other that the said representations appear in relief or perspective and in proper relative positions.
It further consists of leaves or sections of differential lengths whereby the representations thereon will appear. as if in relief or Y perspective when the said leaves are properly manipulated.
It further consists of means for holding the leaves or sections after the same have 'been laced in operative position.
It urther consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be, hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of display card embodying my invention in fiat pesltion. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view on line H F-i 1. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of t e parts 1n operative position and showing the same locked. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 represent front elevations of the leaves in separated osition. Fig. 7 're esents a perspective view at a portion 0 the card showing the connection between the back sheet 1 and the intermddiate sheet 7.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referrin to the drawings, my invention relates to isplay cards having a plurality of leaves, on 'which I place, in any suitable manner, either by locating the same directly upon the sections, or attaching the same thereto, various ornamentatwns, representations of scenes or re resentatmns of people,
animals etc., in suita le relation with respect to each other, so that when the sections are manipulated to place the leaves in different vertical planes the ornamentations or representations thereon, or carried thereby, will also be situated in different vertical sire it understood 'that'chan" es maybe made i therein, the arrangement 0 the arts may be varied and other instrumenta ities may be employed which will come the scope of 'my invention and I do not there fore desire to be limited in every to the exact form as herein shown and described but desire to make such changes as may be necessary.
I desire it further understood that the display card may be used tor a purpose such as an amusement device,- a vertlsing device, etc., and that the scenes thereon may be varied or changed, as may be desirable, and so arranged on the leaves or sectiens that when the same are caused to assume their operative position that the represcntm tions are in suitable relation to each other,
-1 desi ates the rear leaf or support 0% the disp ay card and upon the front face thereof, I provide the back-ground of a scene, it being understood that this tackground may be placed directly upon the leaf or may be secured thereto 1n any surta'ble manner.
2 designates "the front leaf 'or section which, in the present instance, is formed ire tegral with the backleaf or section 1, and 'iS bent forwardly thereon'but said front leaf 2 may be attached, if desired, in any sartaifle V manner, to the said section 1. In the ent instance the front leaf or section 21s 1n the form of a frame ha'vrng the n 3 therein of suitable size and extent in or r j to permit the viewing of the background upon the back leaf or sectlon and so training the picture. 'Upon the leaf or section 2, provide omamentations UINPWHMQMSOI suitable design. In the present instance have shown a house 4 with trees fl and folia'ge or flowers 6, the 'sameextending, rn the present instance, upwardly from the edge the opening 3 but it will *be apparent that these ornamentations'or representations may extend from the frame or the ed of the opening 3 at any suitable point an maybe, 1
desired, secured thereto in any suit'able manner. It will be noted that the leaf 2 '1s shorter than the back leaf or section 1 'm is brought into position order that when the free end or edge thereof to coincide or be situated adjacent the free end of the back leaf or section l that the latter is bowed, as best seen in Fig.3, causing it to be considerably separated or to be situated in a different vertical plane, so that the ornamentations or representations, on the two leaves, will apear in relief or perspective as will be evident and that the same will be suitably positioned in order to represent a scene or other desired representation.
'7 designates an intermediate leaf which is connected or extends from the opposite edge of the back leaf or section 1 from that from which the leaf 2 extends and, in the present mediate leaf instance, with said back leaf of section 1 but the same may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. I provide on the front face of the leaf 7. any suitable ornamentations or representati'ons and it will be noted that the said inter- 7 is shorter than the back leaf or section 1 but is longer than the front leaf or section 2 whereby it will be understood that when the parts are caused to assume their operative position the free edge of the leaf 7 will contact with a suitable stop in order that the same will be slightly bowed and will stand intermediate the back'leaf 1 and the front leaf 2 in substantially the por as sition seen in Fig. 3 and thus causing the ornamentations or representations thereon to be situated in a different vertical plane from either that of the front or the back leaf, the effect of which upon the scene or picture will be evident. In .the stance, the free edge of the lea 7 will be seated at the joint or crease between the leaves 1 and 2, which-thus forms a stop or abutment for the leaf 7.
Any suitable means may be employed for hold ng the parts in their operative position and in the present instance, I have provided a slot or slit 8 in the front leaf 2 and the extendin tab -9 on the back leaf or section 1 which 1s adapted to be inserted into theslot 8, as best seen in Fig. 3, to hold the parts in their proper osition.
From the a ove it will be understood that I have provided a display card which can be .providedwith any suitable ornamentations,
representations or scenes; that the same is 111 the form of a knock-down display card so that the leaves may be folded against each other and in flat position, as seen in Fig. 1
, proper and Fig. .2, and can be easily manipulated to cause the same to assume the proper operative position, as seen in Fig. 3, in order to display the ornamentations or representations in the form of a scene or picture and in relations with respect to each other. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I have shown the leaf 7 as integral resent in- 'in 1. In a device of the character stated, a rear leaf having a background thereon, a front leaf extending from one end of the rear leaf and having representations thereon forming portions of a picture complementary to the background and being suitably cut away, and an intermediate leaf having representations thereon forminggportions of a picture complementary to the background and the other representations, said intermediate leaf being suitably cut away and extending from the other end of said rear leaf and said leaves being of difierent lengths.
2. In a-device of the character stated, a
rear leaf having a background thereon, a 1
front leaf extending from one end of the rear leaf and having representations thereon forming a portion of a picture complementary to the background and being suitably cut away, means for securing the free end of the front leaf with the opposite end of the rear leaf, and an intermedlate leaf having representations thereon forming "a portion of a picture complementary to the background and to the other representations, said intermediate leaf being suitably cut awayand extending from the other end of said rear leaf and said leaves-being of different lengths.
3. In a device of the character stated, a rear leaf carrying a background, a front leaf extending from one end of said rear leaf having representations thereon and being suitably cut away and an intermediate leaf extendin from the other end of said rear leaf, having representations thereon and besuitably cut away, said leaves being of different lengths and said intermediate leaf bein adapted to abut a suitable stop when sai rear leaf is bowed in order to assure a position between sald leaves at a suitable distance away from each and saldbackground and representations being complementary. I
4. In adevice of the character stated, a
rear leaf carrying a background, a front leaf extending from one end of said rear leaf having representations thereon and being suitably cut away, anintermediate leaf extending from the other end of said rear leaf, havin representations thereon and being suitab y cut away, said leaves being of different lengths and said intermediate leaf being adapted to abut a suitable stop when said rear leaf is bowed in order to assure 'a position between said leaves at a suitable distance away from each, said background and representations being complementary, and means for holding the leaves in operative position.
