FILE CLIP AND PLATE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. Tron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File Clips and Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a plate showing a number of clips properly connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a view showing a portion of the plate and clips connected thereto, one of the clips illustrating a modification from the clips shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional` view taken on line 3--3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken through the plate and the clip binding or holding flange as illustrated in the right hand clip and at the upper end thereof, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on line 6 6, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 7 7, Fig. 2.

The present invention has relation to plates and clips designed for filing cabinets and has specific reference to the manner of connecting the clips and to the formation thereof and attaching the index numbers.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawing.

In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the plate which may be of any size reference being had to the number of clips designed to be attached thereto. For the purpose of providing means for connecting the clips hereinafter described the angle bars 2 are provided, which angle bars are secured by rivets or otherwise to the plate 1. The vertical members of the angle bars 2 are provided with the integral down folded portions 3, between which down folded portions are located the integral horizontal flanges 4 from which flanges extend the index holding bars 5, which bars are provided with the heads 6, said heads being located at the ends of the bars 5. The horizontal flanges 4 are located at the upper edges of the vertical members of the angle bars and are so located for the purpose of spacing the bars 5 a short distance from the face of the plate 1.

indexing or numbering the various clips, the tabs 7 are provided, which tabs are preferably formed of sheet metal and are bent around the short bars 5 as best illustrated in Fig. 7, said tabs being located between the heads 6 and the horizontal flanges 4 by which arrangement the tabs are held in proper position, but can be easily removed from time to time and new tabs for different numbers or names if desired placed in position.

The clips proper consist of a single piece of wire, one end of which is secured to the plate 1 as illustrated at 8, Fig. 2, and the wire secured to the angle bars 2 by means of the vertical flanges of the angle bars 2 and the folded portions 3. The clip consists of the connected portions 9 the horizontal portions 10, the inward extending portions 11 and 12, the connecting member 13 and the bottom member 14, but it will be understood that it is not absolutely necessary to follow the exact formation as the object hereinafter described can be accomplished without specific reference to the exact formation, but the clip must be so formed that it will hold a bunch of credit slips when said credit slips are placed under the wire clip as illustrated in Fig. 1. The bottom or lower member 14 is for the purpose of producing a stop as against end movement of the credit slip in one direction, or in other words forms a stop for the credit slips 15.

For the purpose of preventing the slips from passing the member 14, the plate 1 is provided with an indented groove 16 in which groove the member 14 is seated as best illustrated in Fig. 4. It will be understood that by providing the integral vertical flange 17, which forms a part of the angle bar 2 said vertical flange will provide a guide or what might be more specifically termed a gage against which the sides of the credit slips are designed to abut when placed in proper' position underthe spring clips.

It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement the indexes or other identiication tabs are located at one side of the clips, thereby leaving the clips free of any index plates, tabs or tab holders,by which arrangement theupper surfaceof the credit slips isentirely exposed to view, except the wire which constitutes the clip proper; but owing to the fact that the wire which constitutes the clip is of small gage its location above the credit slip or slips will not interfere to any great extent, and by reason of the index being located entirely at one side it does not interfere with the upper surface of the credit slip. In use it is frequently desirable to provide means whereby a given number of credit slips may be separated as for instance one days work or other predetermined time which means an accumulation of a number of credit slips, which number is to be kept separate or in other words distinct and in order to provide for this the spring clips may be provided with the extended portion 18 and when the clip is so provided the wire constituting the clip or a portion of the clip is bent as illustrated in dotted lines at 19 and the portions bound or connected between the vertical flange 17 and the down turned portion 3.

It will be understood that by forming the clip of spring wire the auditing extension 18 can be easily lifted as illustrated in dotted lines Fig. 3, thereby, allowing the extension 18 to come between the bunch of credit slips at any desired point, that is to say any given number of slips may be located below the extension 18 and securely held in position without interfering` with placing of additional slips under the clips proper.

It is Well understood that the credit slips are designed to be temporarily held and that additional slips are added from time to time and others removed from time to time, hence it is of importance that the clips are so formed that they will not interfere to any great extent with the insertion or withdrawal of the credit slips. In order to provide for this convenience the clips proper are provided with the lateral extensions tied together by the member 13, which member is so located that it will be 'spaced some distance from the outer edge of the credit slip, thereby leaving sufficient room for the slip or slips to be grasped by the thumb and fingers when removing the same, and not interfering to any great extent when inserting a slip. In some instances it may be desirable to arrange the spring clip so that it will be what might be termed a left handed clip and in order to provide for so locating the clip the folded portions 3 are located near each end of the angle bar 2, so that the bar can be changed end for end and the clip located upon the left hand side of the bar instead of the right as shown in the drawing. This is a matter of location only, but by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to provide means for producing either right or left hand clips as desired.

While I have described thetabs 7 as a means for indexing or numbering the various clips, I do not wish to be limited to this construction. It is evident that the appropriate index letters, figures, or symbols might be written or printed, stamped or otherwise attached to or arranged upon the bars 5 without the use of an additional tab such as T or its equivalent.

Having fully described my inventionI what I claim as new and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is-

1. In a` le clip and plate. the combination of a plate, an angle bar secured to the plate, said angle bar consisting of horizontal and vertical flanges, the vertical flange provided with a horizontal flange spaced from the plate and provided with a headed bar, tabs secured to the bar and ar spring clip secured to the angle bar, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.

2. A tile clip of the class described consisting of an angle bar having horizontal and vertical tianges, said horizontal [langes located upon opposite sides of the vertical flange, one of said horizontal tianges provided with a tab holding bar, said vertical llangey provided with integral folded portions and a spring clip secured to the bar. substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a tile clip, the combination ot' a plate, an angle bar,said angle bar provided with an integral tab holding bar, said tab holding bar spaced from the surface of the plate and a spring clip secured to said angle bar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. In a tile clip and plate, the combination of a plate, an angle bar secured to said plate, a spring clip held in lixed relationship with reference to the angle bar and plate, said plate provided with an indented groove and one member of the spring clip located in the indented groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

G. A tile clip formed of a single piece of wire, said clip consisting of spaced lateral extended bent port-ions, said extended bent portions joined together, end members` located beyond the lateral extended portions and means for securing said clip in fixed position, and an integral auditing extension, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

7. In a clip of the class described, the combination of a. plate, a bar secured to said plate, a spring clip secured tio said bar, said bar provided with a tab holding bar having a head and the tab holding bar located at'. one side of the clip, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a ile clip, the combination of a plate provided with an indented groove, a bar secured to said plate, said bar provided with a tab holding element, a tab secured to said tab holding element, a spring clip held in fixed position, one member of said spring clip located in the indented groove in the plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

9. In a file clip, the combination of a plate provided With an indented groove, a bar secured to said plate, said bar provided with artab holding element, a tab secured to said tab holding element, a spring clip held in fixed position, one lneniber of said spring clip located in the indented groove in the plate and an auditing extension, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a file clip and plate, the combina.- tion of a plate, an angle bar secured to the plate, said angle bar consisting of horizontal and vertical flanges, the vertical liange provided with a second horizontal flange spaced from the said plate and provided with a bar adapted to display an index syinbol arranged thereon, and a spring clip secured to the angle bar.

A file clip of the class described consisting of an angle bar having horizontal and vertical flanges, said horizontal flanges located upon opposite sides of the vertical flange, one of said horizontal flanges pr0 vided with a bar adapted to display an index symbol arranged thereon, said vertical flange provided With integral folded portions and a spring clip secured to the bar by the said folded portions.

l2. In a file` clip, the combination of a 5 plate, an angle bar, said angle bar provided With an integral index displaying bar, said index displaying bar spaced from the sur face of said plate and a spring clip secured to said angle bar and adapted to hold credit slips between said clip and said plate.

13. In a file clip, the combination of a plate, an angle bar, said angle bar provided With an integral index displaying bar, said index displaying bar spaced from the surface of said plate and a spring clip, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

lil. In a clip of the class described, the combination of a plate, a bar secured to said plate, a spring clip secured to said bar, said bar provided With an index displaying bar, and the index displaying bar located at one side of the said clip.
