JAMES A. NELL, F WALDEN, NEW YORK.
POCKET-KNIFE.
naanoo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909.
Application led April G, 1909. Serial No. 488,201.
improvements in Pocket-Knives, of which i the following a specitication.
lily invention relates to pocket knives, and more particularly to that character of pocket knives which einbodv sninfr actuated nort nialtiv locked blades, and depressible side buttons for releasing the salue7 and the obiett of my invention is to provide certain unprovenwnts in the construction and arrangement oit the several parts, which will` he hereina'tter descriliied.
ln the accompanying drawings, which illustrato my invention, and forni a part of this speeiieation, Figure l is a perspective View oiK the complete knife. Fig. 2 is a side ett-ration thereof partly broken away to show the blade therein in its closed position. Vig. I. is an elevation ot one of the side seetions. looking at the inner face thereof. Fig. l is a central longitudinal sectional rien through the linife.
Fig. 5 is a perl sportive vien ot a portion of one ot the` handle plates` and illustrating in detail the several parts comprising the blade releasing mechanism, and, Fig. (t is a sectional perspective View ot the locking lever. illus trating the manner in which the tail of the `sp1-Vlg plate is secured thereto.
ln the practical einlanlunent of my inven l har head tion. I providia pair ol side sections l and l L. secured together in spaced relation at` their ends hy transverse rivets or plus and t. the nin l passing through a spacing block t fr heter-en said sections,y and pin 2 passing through an opening transversely through the butt" end of the blade (i, extending be tween said sections7 which blade provided with diainetrieally alined openings T and S upon opposite sides ot pin il.
The set-tions l and .2 each comprise handle pieces 'J and 10, respectively lniving curved outer `rui-tacos, and flat inner surfaces to which are secured the handle plates ll and Vtl resl'wotively, carrying between them, ad-
to which is connected the kick spring M, hearing against the blade 6 to open the saine when released.
The handle piece ll is provided with a longitudinal channel l5, cored out in its inner surface, and with a slotted opening 1G iaeent one edge, the stationary back piece 13, i
through its outer surface, communicating with said channel. The handle plate 1l, which covers said channel 15, has an enlarged opening 1T therethrough and small openings t8 and l) longitudinally alined with opening 1.7, the material from said opening lt) being pressed inwardly Within channel 1T to vt'orni a tongue Q0.
Mounted upon the inner surface of plate 1l, and extending between openings 17 and it), is a longitudinally movable latch bar 21, provided adjacent opening li' with an angular curved and biturcated head 22, and with a lug 23 adjacent said head, between which lug it?) and said tongue 2() extends a spring 2t, tending to force said latch bar `l longitudinally toward the opening 17.
Mounted also upon the inner surface of plate ll, between openings 17 and 18, is a lever Q5, having upon one end thereof an angularly extending locking pin 26, adapted to project through opening 18, and through the blade openings 7 and S when said blade is in the closed and open positions respectively. Lever 25 is provided vvith an angularlv projecting opposite end 217, Which extends over the head of latch bar 2l, as shown in ["ig. t, and is provided with a longitudinal slot 2S, adjacent the handle piece opening lt'. A press button 2S) has its shank Q9 projecting loosely through the lever slot Q8, and secured to a plato having a reduced end intertitting the bifurcated latch Thus` to press button 29 in wardly. the saine is first moved longitudinally iu slot 2S until plate 30 pushes latch har 21 beyond the end of lever 25, when said lever may he rocked and its pin 26 withdrawn troni either of the blade openings 7 and S in which it may be located.
Mounted upon the outer surface of plate ll, Within opening 17, by its central trunnions 3l. which engage in depressions in said plate at the sides of said opening, is a spring plate 32, having one end thereof bent inn'ardl;v through opening l? and slotted to receive the headed end of latch bar 21 therethrough, and forni a guide 33 Jfor said latch bar. The opposite end of said spring plate forms a` tapering tail 34, Which engages between and within undercut lugs 35 of the lever 25, thus constituting a spring tending to hold lever Q5 flat against the inner surface of plate 1l, With its pin Q6 extending i Seen that the blade is automatically looked in both the open and closed positions. It is thought that the operation of releasing the blade to he opened or closed, has been made, el xar and will laA readil)v apparent.
Having described in)V invention, l olaiin:
