FRUIT-JAR WRENCH.

Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. NIEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit Jar Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in fruit jar wrenches, used in sealing and removing fruit jar caps, and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive article composed of few parts, which may be easily and quickly applied, and will exert the required amount of evenly distributed pressure to turn the caps.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in two jaws hinged together, a lever pivoted to one jaw and adjustably connected with the other, whereby the wrench may be fitted to the cap in such a way that the required pressure may be applied.
The invention still further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view, Fig. 2 is a-view of the handle detached, taken at right angles to Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section through the wrench showing the offsets in the hinged ends of the jaws, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the preferred form of handle.'

F and H are the jaws, to one of which the handle is pivoted at E. The jaws are preferably made of sheet steel, approximately semi-circular in form, held together by a rivet Gr, whereby to form a hinge, the jaws preferably being ofi'set as shown in Fig. 3, at the hinged ends, whereby to bring the body portion thereof approximately in alinement.
The handle A may be made of sheet metal bent into U-shape in cross-section if preferred, as shown in Fig. 4, although other approved forms might be resorted to. It is b1 urcated at the pivoted end as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with the orifices L to 1 receive the rivet E. The handle is also provided with a slot O through which the eyebolt J extends, one end of the bolt J being pivoted as at I to the jaw H, and the other end provided with an adjustable nut K which operates in the seat B on the handle, this being turned to fit the wrench to the size of the cap to be turned. A shoulder D is formed near the pivoted end' of the handle to abut against the end of the jaw F to limit the movement of the handle in one direction. The dotted lines in Fig. 1 indicate theposition the handle takes when the jaws are drawn up tight around the cap. To tighten the cap, the wrench is placed on in such a way that in pulling on the handle, it will take the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, causing the jaws to close and clamp the cap securely and uniformly throughout its circumference. If the wrench slips in consequence of not fitting properly, it is simply necessary to turn the adjusting nut a little to the right to reduce the extension of the jaws, and bring their free ends closer toether to fit the cap. In this way, the jaws may be quickly and easily fitted to any size of cap, and the device may be applied or removed with perfect ease, and is most effectual in the performance of its function.
It is evident that more or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a fruit jar wrench comprising two jaws hinged together at one end, a handle pivotally connected with the free end of one jaw, an eyebolt pivotally connected with the free end of the other jaw and passing through a slot in the handle, and a nut on the threaded end of the eye-bolt for adjusting the length of the latter whereby to fit the jaws to the cap to be turned.
