I 3e it known that I, SIMON F. FRAZIER, a CltlZell' of the United States, residing at Quenemo, in the county of Osage-and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and I do.

This invention relates to improvements in brooms.

The object of the invention is to provide a broom head and a removable handle there'- for and means to detachably and firmly secure the handle to the broom head.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inex ensive in construction efficient and reliablia in operation and so formed as to enable the handle to be quickly and easily secured to the broom ead.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts, as will be more fully descri ed and particularly pointed out in the "In the accompanyiiig drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a broom constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a' vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the broom attaching ferrule; Fig. 4 is a similar View of a modified form of attaching device.

Referring more particularly to the draw- \ings, 1 denotes the broom head which is formed on a central'core said core being preferably in the form of a wooden plug 2,

, the upper end of which projects a slight distance above the neck 3 of the broom head, as shown at 4. The handle 5 of the broom may be, of the usual or any desired construction and has secured to its lower end a ferru1e'6 which is adapted to snu ly fit the lower end of the handle and is pre erably secured thereto by means of a nail or screw 7 which is inserted through the ferrule and driven into the handle, as shown. The end of the handle is projected approximately half way through the ferrule so that a socket is formed in the outer end of the same, by means of which the ferrule is engaged with the pro'ecting' end 4 of the plug 2 in the broom ea'd and the .ferrule is preferably held in engagement with the end of the plug by means of a nail or screw 8, as shown.

On the opposite sides of the ferrule 6,'are formed or secured tubular sockets 9 through which are adapted to be inserted nails or spikes 10 which extend longitudinallyof the ferrule, when the handle and ferrule are in engagement with the broom head, are.

adapted to be driven longitudinally into the hard inner portion of the head thus securely bracing and holding the handle in position on the broom head.

By providing a broom head and handle attaching device constructed as herein shown and described, a handle may be quickly and easily secured in place and rigidly held in position on the broom head and when the head is worn out the handle may be detached and applied to a new head, thereby saving the expense of a separate handle for each new broom head.

In Fig. 4 of the drawings, is shown a modified form of handle attaching device, said device comprisinga ferrule 12 having on its lower end broom head engaging prongs 13 which are adapted to be forced into the head of the broom when the device is applied thereto for attaching the handle. The prongs 13 and ferrule 12 are cast in one iece and the ferrule is applied to the end 0 the broom handle and the projecting end of the )lil ixs escribed in connection with the first figures of the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s:

ferrule secured on the end of the handle, sockets arranged on the sides of said ferrule, and nails arranged in said sockets and adapted to be driven into the broom head when the ferrule is engaged therewith to secure the handle thereto.

In a broom, a broom head, having a core in the form of a plug arranged to pro ject beyond the neck of the broom head, av handle, a ferrule secured to the end of said handle, and adapted to be engaged with the projecting end of the plug in said broom head, sockets arranged on the side of the ferrule and fastening nails arranged in said sockets and adapted to be forced into the broom head to secure the sockets and handle thereto. r
