msrran sra rasrarnnr er sion SAMUEL E. FINLEY, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
STREET-PAVEME NT Application filed June 10, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. FINLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Pavements; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in street pavements especially of the wooden block type.
It has for its object to provide such a pavement capable of extended wear, as well as being simple and cheap in construction, provision being made for the effective drainage of water and the preservation of the life of the individual block members of the pavement.
It has for its object to carry out these purposes in an expeditious, economical and simple manner.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claim.
11 the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my inventionx-Figure 1 is a partly sectional and plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In practicing my invention I first suitably lay or prepare a concrete base 1 and upon this base is superposed an additional layer of material or mortar 2 formed of cement and sand. Upon this upper layer are arranged ordinary pavement blocks 3 preferably wood although they may be bricks or of other material as may be desired, said blocks being of ordinary general outline or contour. In said mortar layer are formed trough-like passages or recesses 4 preferably of \l-shaped outline with their apices presented downwardly, for receiving drainage from the pavementformed by the wooden blocks, and for ventilating purposes.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Serial No. 437,730.
Said passages or recesses 4 are produced in the mortar layer at points about centrally below the individual blocks of the pavement, as it is a well known fact that the blocks especially when made of wood absorb a certain amount of water, and when treating the blocks under hydraulic pressure loss creosote reaches the center than any other part, and conse uently there is more water at this point and hence the passages 4 in the mortar bed are arranged to come about the center of the blocks and operate to absorb considerable of this moisture by evaporation, and also to receive the water that works down between the joints. These passages or recesses communicating with a common passage or recess 5 produced or formed in the upper and lower layer of material, parallel with the curbing and discharging into the ordinary catch basin 6, thus providing for conducting away the drainage received by the passages 4 below the pavement, into said catch basin, also for ventilation, as is a parent.
It will be noted t lat by means of the afore said arrangement of features or parts that an exceedingly simple and inexpensive pavement, especially for street purposes, is provided and one which is capable of perfect drainage and maintained in a )erfect state of preservation for a maximum length of time, thus promoting utility and durability.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention A pavement comprising a foundation havin its upper face provided with longitudina ly spaced trough-like passages extending transversely across the pavement, similar passages arranged longitudinally of the pavement at opposite sides thereof and communicating with said transverse passages, a
catch basin arranged to receive the discharge my hand in presence of .two subscribing Witgrom saiid longiitrtldinal passagesh and bllocks nesses.
ispose on saic 'oundation Wit their ower 4 faces opposed to said trough-like passages SAMUEL FINLEY' 5 and with said transverse passages extending 'VVitnesses:
centrally below the individual blocks. ALLEN P. DAVIS, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set V R. E. JENKINS.
