Be it known that I, WILLIAM HAMILTON WALLACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Single Delivery Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to match boxes, and the object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple, durable and eilective device of this character, wherein matches may be readily deposited within a receptacle, and easily and quickly withchawn therefrom one at a time. The receptacle is provided with an operating door positioned slightly above the floor of the receptacle and having one of its ends provided with serrations whereby, when the door is operated and one of the matches within the receptacle falls by gravity through the opening provided by the door, the head of the match will contact with the serrations, and the match become ignited as it is withdrawn from the receptacle.

With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, illustrating the matches in position within the box. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the manner of operating the door when the withdrawal of a match from the receptacle is desired. Fig. i is a similar view, showing the head of the match contacting the serrated edge of the door and in position to be ignited upon its withdrawal. Fig. 5 is a central transverse sectional view upon the line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 66 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the door removed from the receptacle.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a hollow receptacle, comprising the body of my improved match safe. This receptacle 1 is provided with a top wall 2 and a bottom wall 3. The bottom wall 3 of the device is provided with a match receiving and withdrawing opening 4, and a slot 5, adapted for Specification of Letters Patent.

the reception of an operating pin 6 of a subfloor 7 provided within the receptacle. The floor 7 is constructed of a strip of resilient material, and is provided upon one of its ends with a curved lip 8, provided with a series of teeth or serrations 9. The opposite end of the floor 7 is secured to a projection 10 provided within the receptacle.

By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be seen that the floor 7 is normally adapted to lie in a plane parallel with the bottom 3 of the receptacle, from which it is suitably spaced by the projection 10, and that the fioor 7 extends substantially the entire width of the interior of the receptacle.

In operating my device, it will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that the pintle 6 projecting through the opening 5 below the bottom of the receptacle is contacted by the finger of an operator, causing the resilient floor 7 to bend and project the lip 8 of the floor downwardly and away from the side of the receptacle with which it normally contacts, thus allowing a single match to drop through the opening thus obtained. The opening provided by the floor when contacted by the finger of an operator is not suflicient to allow the entire withdrawal of the match, the head of the match being engaged between the serrated lip 8 and the side of the receptacle. When the match is withdrawn entirely from the receptacle, it will be noted that the head engages the teeth 9 upon the lip of the floor and the match will be ignited upon its withdrawal.

From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple and effective receptacle for matches which is provided with means for regulating the withdrawal of the matches one at a time and which provides for the ignition of the match as it is withdrawn from the receptacle.

Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:

The herein described match box having closed ends, one provided with a match discharging opening at one side of the box and also provided with a substantially centrally located opening, a projection in the box on the end having the openings and at the side of the box 0 posite the match discharging opening, a resil ient strip within the box constituting the floor thereof and securedat one end on said projection, and lying normally parallel with and spaced from the end of the box having the openings, the free end of said strip being outturned, roughened on one side to form a match igniting surface, and normally closing the match discharging opening, and a pintle attached to said strip and extending through and movable in the central opening 01 said end of the box.
