WINDOW-SCREEN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, .residing at Silver Creek, in the county of Lawrence and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVindow- Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window screens, and the object of the invention is to provide a window screen with a series of openings provided with a metallic shield or apron, whereby winged insects within a room may be permitted to escape, and which will effectively prevent the entrance of insects from the exterior.
Another object of the invention is to provide a window screen having its side bars provided with novel means whereby the screen may be adjusted to various sizes of windows.
With these and other objects in View the invention resides in the novel construction of window screens hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame, illustrating my improved screen in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the screen removed, a portion of the top bar being shown in section to illustrate the manner of securing the adjusting strip. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the top bar and side stile, and illustrating the adjusting strip in position upon the stile. Fig. 5 is a vertical trans verse section upon the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the corners of the frame. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the ends of the adjusting strip. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the plates used in the construction of my improved screen.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a screen constructed in accordance with my invention. The screen 1 comprises a top bar 2, a bottom bar 3 and stiles 4 and 5. The screening 6 is applied to the frame in the usual manner, and is held securely positioned thereon by a bead or molding 7, extending around the inner edges of one of the faces of the frame. The screen 6 is provided with a series of cut away portions or openings 8, extending in a longitudinal line with the frame, and being Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with a hood or apron 9, which is secured to the body of the screen and to the stiles 4 and 5 of the frame. This hood 9 is adapted to have its free end extend outwardly from the screen at a suitable angle, to provide means whereby winged insects may have free passage through the openings 8 to the exterior of the room in which the screen is positioned.
The stile 4 may be made of a lesser thickness than the remaining bars of the frame, or may be suitably rabbeted to reduce the thickness of the stile to approximately onehalf the thickness of the remaining bars. The top and bottom bars 2 and 3, are ended at their meeting with the inner face of the stile 4 so as to provide a shoulder 10. The under faces of the bars 2 and 3 are recessed as at 11', and the inner wall of the recesses is in a plane of alinement with the reduced face 12 of the stile 41. A vertical adjusting strip 13, is provided, and this strip is of a thickness equaling that of the shoulder 10 provided upon the bars 2 and 3. The strip 10 is provided at its top and bottom with a staple 14, having one of its arms provided with a depression 15. This staple 15 is adapted to be positioned within the recess 11 of the top and bottom bars. A suitable plate 16, having an elongated slot 17, and a plurality of openings adapted for the reception of retaining elements is provided upon the inner faces of the top and bottom bars directly below the recesses 11. An L-shaped hook 18, having its vertical portion provided with suitable threads, is adapted for engaging the recessed portions 15 of the staples 14, and the vertical arms of the hooks 18 are adapted to have their threaded extremities provided with winged retaining elements 19, which have their-inner face bearing against the plates 16, and thus providing means whereby the strip 13 may be retained in adj usted position upon the stile 1.
While I have illustrated and described the adjusting strip 13 as being applied to only one of the stiles of the frame, it will of course be understood that the strip may be applied to both of the stiles should it be desired.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple, cheap and effective screen for windows, one in which insects within a room are provided with passages whereby they may make their exit to the exterior of the house. The hood 9, serving to obscure the openings and providing a darkening or shade for the openings from the exterior Will provide an effective means for preventing the entrance of insects from the outer face of the screen. It Will be further noted that I have provided an effective device for adjusting the screen in a longitudinal direction so as to render it applicable to various sizes of Windows.
Having thus fully described the invention What is claimed as neW is:
In a device of the character described, a frame, a screen upon the frame, the screen being provided With a plurality of openings, a hood for said openings, the end stiles of the frame being reduced, extension strips provided in said reduced stiles, the ends of the top and bottom bar being provided with recesses, a plate having a slot for the recesses, the extension strips being provided With staples having recesses and adapted to engage the recesses of the top and bottom bars, an L-shaped hook having a threaded vertical member engaging the recesses of each of the staples, said threaded member extending through the slot provided Within the plate and adapted for the reception of a threaded retaining member.
