WILLIAM J. TEESE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Tense, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved lock especially adapted for use on trunks, desks or other similar articles.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed lock which cannot be picked or broken by a blow and which cannot be removed from the outside.
Another object is to provide a lock with means whereby it may be locked or unlocked without the use of a key and which is also provided with auxiliary locking mechanism operable by a key.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel Vfeatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a box having this improved lock applied in locked position and with portions broken out; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2 1-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. l is a rear elevation of a detached lock, the parts being shown in unlocked position and with the plate partly turned; Fig. 5 is a similar view with the parts unlocked; Fig. 6 is a perspective view taken from the rear of the revoluble plate detached; Fig. 7 is a similar view of the box engaging member detached; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the lid-carried member detached. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the bolt.
In the embodiment illustrated, this lock is shown applied to a box and comprises a face plate 1 constructed of any suitable material and in any desired form having a key hole 2 extending transversely therethrough, preferably at a point near its periphery. A screw threaded stud 3 projects from the center of the inner face of Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Serial No. 427,412.
said plate and is adapted to pass through the box engaging member to be described and through the front wall of the box where it is secured by any suitable means such as a nut 4 which holds it securely in position. This plate is provided on its inner face with a semi-circular or arc shaped locking element preferably made in the form of a rib 5 xed to said plate a suitable distance from the center thereof and having a concentric groove G formed in its inner edge and adapted to receive the flanges of the box and lid carried members hereinafter described. This groove G is preferably formed by an overhanging lip 7 projecting from the inner edge of said rib 5. This lip 7 terminates short of one end of the rib 5 to form a stop 8 for a purpose to be described. The lip 7 at the other end of the rib 5 is recessed to form a keeper 9 to receive the locking bolt to be described.
A member in the form of a semi-circular casing 10 having a concentric flange or lip llraround the curved portion of its outer face is attached to the front wall of the box at its upper end by means of the screw bolt or stud 3 of the plate 1 which passes through an aperture 12 at a point about the center of said casing near its straight edge and by means of screws which have their heads countersunk in the front of said casing. A catch member 18 extends from the straight end of said casing in a plane parallel with its inner and outer faces and is designed to engage a keeper member carried by the lid as hereinafter described. The outer plate of this casing has a key hole into which projects a key post 141 carried by the inner plate and on which the barrel of the key 30 fits and turns. A locking bolt 15 of any suitable construction is arranged in a recess within said casing in position to be projected and withdrawn through an opening in one edge of the casing by means of the key 30. This bolt 15 as shown has a keeper engagirig end 16 preferably inclined upwardly and adapted to operate in an opening in the edge of the casing. This bolt has a slot 17 in its upper edge which is preferably inclined rearwardly and in which one end of a plate spring 18 is bent to lit, the other end of said spring being arranged to bear against and slide on the upper wall of the recess in which the bolt is located. A curved recess 19 is formed in the lower edge of the bolt in which the key 30 is adapted to operate, the bit of the key being designed to engage the walls of the curved recess and assisted' rib 24 on which the curved cam 21 rides and which engages notches 22 and 23, respectively, to hold the bolt in either of its two positions.
A keeper member is screwed to the outer face of the lid by screws or other suitablev means and preferably comprises a semicircular plate 25 having a straight lower edge provided with a socket 26 to receive the catch member 13 of the box carried member. This plate 25 is provided on its outer face at the curved edge thereof with a concentric lip or flange 27 extending in the same plane as said outer face and forms a semi-circular groove in which the lip of the plate 1 operates and which serves to lock said members together to prevent opening of the lid.
In the use of this improved lock, the parts being assembled as shown in Fig. 1, the plate or dial 1 is released by turning the key 30 to disengage the bolt 15 from the keeper formed at the end of the rib 5 and withdraw it into the casing. The plate 1 is then turned one-half way around until its flange or lip is disengaged from the lip 27 of the lid carrying member 25 thereby permitting said lid to be raised.
The stop S at the end of the rib 5 is adapted to engage a stop 28 on the casing 10 to limit the movement of the plate 1 in the direction of the arrow Y) and said plate 1 is limited in its other direction by the engagement of the stop 28 with one wall of the keeper formed at the end of rib 5. It will thus be seen that by turning the plate 1 in the direction of the arrow I), the rib 5 thereof is engaged with the lip 27 of the keeper plate 25 and the parts are locked together without the use of a key, and they may be unlocked by simply turning the plate in the opposite direction or in the direction of the arrow a.
The bolt 15 forms an auxiliary locking means operable by the key 30 as above described. It will also be observed that the key 30 being inserted through the hole in the movable plate 1 and engaged with the pin of the casing, holds said plate against turn ing until the key is removed.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Variousfchange's in the form, proportion and the vminor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention z- 1. A lock comprising a revoluble member provided with an arc-shaped rib having a concentric inturned lip and a fixed member having an arc shaped element arranged for interlocking engagement with the lip of said revoluble member t-o lock said members against separation.

3. A lock comprising a semi-circular casing having a concentric lip around the curved portion thereof, a catch member projecting from the straight edge of said casing in the same pla-ne therewith, a bolt mounted in said casing for projection and withdrawal through an opening in one edge of said casing, said bolt having an inclined slot in one edge thereof, a plate spring slidable 105 in said casing and having one end bent to engage the slot in the bolt, said bolt having a curved key receiving recess in -its lowerv edge, a cam at the rear of said recess and a rib on said xed member for engagement 110 with said cam to hold the bolt in operative and inoperative position respectively, a keeper having means for engagement with said catch member and a revoluble member operable over said casing and having means 115 on its inner face for engagement with the lip of the fixed member and a keeper for engagement by said bolt.
1. In a lock the combination of a disk like plate having a stud projecting from the 120 center of its inner face and a key hole extending therethrough, an arc shaped rib arranged on the inner face of said plate and having an inturned lip with a keeper formed at one end thereof, and a stop at the other 125 end, a semi-circular casing having a iiange on the curved portion thereof for engage-s ment with the lip of said pla-te and an aperture for the reception of said plate cariied stud, a key operated bolt housed within 130 said casing, a stop Carried by saideasing for engagement With the stop of said plate and a semi-Circular keeper member having a ange on the Curved portion thereof for engagement With the lip of said plate When in locked position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
