Description

time gem Letters Patent No. 90,308, dated May 18, 1869.
IIVIPROVED MEDICAL COMPOUND.
The Bc'nedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVANS ROBINSON, of Fail-port, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, haveinventcd a certain new and improved Medical Gompound; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
This medicine is intended for dysentery, cholera, diarrhma, and other similar bowel-complaints, and is made up of the following elements, in the proportions substantially as named:
For one gallon of the sirup, take, of Turkey rhubarb, one ounce; golden seal, one ounce; nutmeg, two ounces; cinnamon, two ounces; cloves, two ounces. Pulverize finely, and steep, in a cloth bag, three hours, in three quarts of water. Strain, and add six pounds of loaf-sugar. Bring to a scalding heat; cool, and add, saleratus, one ounce; essence peppermint, one ounce; laudanum, one-half ounce; tincture capsicum, one.- balf ounce; best French brandy, one quart.
Some of these elements are in well-known use in medicines for action on the bowels, such, for instance, as rhubarb, laudanum, and brandy. I do not claim these broadly, but only the combination with them of the other parts named, which combination, as a whole, I believe to be new.
' The object to be avoided is a too sudden check to the bowels, which is usually produced by the astringentmedicines now in use. For this reason, I combine, with the astringents, the mild cathartics and tonics, which gradually purge, while they, at the same time, strengthen and heal. That this composition acts in this way, I have tested by practice, and know to be.
