PIPE CUTTER.
APPLIGATION FILED APR.11,-1908.
5111121143., I 143mm? (tuna UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME L. BEARD, OF VICTOR, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT M. TURNER, OF LOST CABIN, I/VYOMING.
PEPE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed April 11,1906. Serial No. 311,151.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME L. BEARD, a citizen of the United Statesgresiding -at Victor, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented fcertain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Cutters, of which the following is a specification. t 'rhis invention relates to a tool for cutting pipe and consists of the novel features, details of constructions and combinations of parts which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and finallyclaimed.
In the accompany drawings forming a part of the specifications: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe cutter embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the de tachable shoe. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the block. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the movable jaw.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The stock or body portion of the combined pipe Wrench and cutter comprises a shank 1 which preferably has a uniform cross section throughout and which is provided at one end with a laterally extending fixed jaw 2. It will be observed that the inner face of the fixed jaw 2 is depressed or curved inwardly and is provided with teeth 3 which are preferably inclined. One side of the shank 1 is also provided with teeth or serrations 4 by means of which an interlocking connection is obtained with the movable jaw 5. The movable jaw 5 is provided upon one side with a series of teeth 6 which are adapted to engage with the teeth 4 u on the shank l, and is formed with a pair of spaced keepers by means of which the movable jaw is slidably mounted upon the shank. In either case the movable jaw 5 can be locked in a fixed position by means of a set screw 8 passing through one of the keepers 7 and engaging with the shank 1. A shoe 10 is fitted over the fixed jaw 2, the said shoe being formed with a longitudinal slot 11 having a pair of pipe cutting disks 12 mounted therein.
One end of the shoe 10 is formed with a collar 13 which fits upon the shank 1 and a set screw 14 passes through the collar and engages with the shank so as to lock the shoe rigidly in position. Each side of the shoe 10 isgalso provided with a pair of diverging arms 15 which embrace the fixed jaw 2. It may also be pointed out that the portion of the shoe 10 fitting against the fixed jaw 2 is formed with teeth or serrations 16 corresponding to the teeth 3.
The movable jaw 5 has its inner face notched at 17 and the removable ipe engaging member 9 is in the form of a b ock having grooves 18 on opposite sides thereof by means of which it is slidably mounted in the notch 17 This block is provided with a pipe cutting disk 19 and is adapted to be forced inward as the cutting operation proceeds by means of the adjusting screw 20 which passes through the movable jaw 5 and bears against the base of the member 9. In this instance, both of the keepers 7 are preferably provided with set screws similar to the set screw 8, and it will be apparent that when the movable jaw has been moved into engagement with the pipe, it can be locked in that position by tightening the set screws so as to I draw the teeth 6 upon the movable jaw into engagement with the rack 4 upon the shank.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: I
1. In combination a shank provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted upon the shank and adapted to be secured thereon at an adjusted position, said movable jaw having a notch in its inner face, a block snugly fitting the recess of the movable jaw and having grooves in opposite ends to receive portions of the jaw bordering upon the recess, a cutter mounted upon said block and a set screw mounted in a thread opening of the movable jaw and adapted to advance the block and the cutter thereby.
2. In combination a shank provided with a fixed jaw having its inner face concave and toothed, a shoe adapted to snugly fit the concave face and provided with matching teeth and with a collar to receive the shank, and provided with pairs of diverged arms to embrace opposite sides of the fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted upon the shank and adapt- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ed to be secured thereon at an adjusted poin presence of two Witnesses.
sition, said movable jaw having a recess, a block fitted in said recess, a set screw threaded'in the movable jaw and ada ted to advance the block, and cutters fitte to the aforesaid shoe and block.
