Application tiled Pbrilary 2l, 1907.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 358,695.
To ft/Z wim'nt it ni/(ty concer/t.-
Be it known that l, CHARLES Foinins'r Mo- BEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Athens, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, new and useful Improvements in Paper- Files, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in interchangeable and permanent tiles for holding papers and especially designed for tiling railroad taritl's and expense bill receipts, but which may be used for any other desired purpose; and the invention consists in cer tain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings .Figure l is a perspective view of a file embodying my invention, the post carrier or cross-bar being applied and locked in place. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on about line 2-2 of Eig. l drawn through the post carrier or cross-bar and through the several telescoping' tubes and pins. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical cross-section illustrating the hook for fastening the cross-bar or pin carrier in place. Eig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the cross-bar or pin carrier. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the body of the file with the papers removed.
In carrying' out my invention l. make the bodyl of the file with a back plate A, a box B at one edge thereof and to which the back plate is preferably connected by a hingejoint at a, said box comprising end plates B', and an upright plate B2 along the rear edges of the end plates B and a top plate C having a hinge connection at C with the box, as will be understood from Figs. l and 5 of the drawing. The file is provided preferably within the box B and between the end plates B thereof with the upwardlyT projectingl tubes D secured at their lower ends to the body of the iile and open and unobstructed at their upper ends so the bills E or other papers may be passed down over the said tubes, as will be understood from the drawings. These tubes D constitute the lower sections of the tile posts, the upper sections comprising; pins F depending from a crossbar G in proper position to enter their respective tubes, the said at its ends to rest upon the end plates B" of the box B, and suitable fastenings being provided for holding the said cross-bar when applied to position for use, as shown in Fig'. 1 of have invented certain l l l l l cross-bar being extended the drawings. These fasteniiigs, as shown comprise a hooli ll pivoted at l'l to the crossbar G and arranged to engage with a suitable pin or bar l on the body of the lile. By this construction it will be noticed the papers when fitted on the tubular sections will be held by the cross-bar with its depending pins entering the open ends of the tubes and fastened as before described.
Tn operation when papers are upon the file the foreilingers may be placed under any particular sheet in the pile with the thumbs on the ends of the cross-piece or bar G and the sheets and cross-piece all lifted from the file when the desired sheet may be removed and another substitute or other' sheets entered at the desired place and the sheets removed be reinserted by securing them in the same manner as when removing them and inserting the points of the pins F in the open ends of the tubular sections and the sheets be dropped over the said tubular sections and the pins and their carrier or cross-bar be locked when readjusted to position by fastening means as described. It will be noticed that when index sheets are employed, as illustrated, they can be placed at any point desired which will be found convenient in the use of the invention for 'Iiling railroad taril'ls and expense bill receipts for which it is especially designed.
lt will be noticed that the cross-bar G is provided on its upper side with projecting pins or studs preferably in alineinent with the extended ends of the pin sections F1 of the posts, these studs G2 fitting, when the lile is closed, in sockets C2 in the cover as shown in the drawings.
I claim- 1. A file substantially as described comprising a body having a baclr plate and a box hinged at one edge thereto and having upwardly projecting end plates and a cover, a series of tubes projecting upwardly within the box between said end plates and open and unobstructed at their upper ends, a cross-'bar or pin carrier provided on its under side with a series of depending pins corresponding to and adapted to telescope within said tubes, the said cross-bar or carriei resting at its ends upon the end plates of the box, a hook secured to said cross-bar or carrier, a bar for engagement by said hook whereby to lock said cross-bar or carrier in position for use, and upwardly projecting pins or studs on said cross-bar or carrier, the cover being pro- IOO IIC
vided With sockets receiving said studs or projections when the iile is closed, substantially as set forth.
2. A file comprising a body having a cover provided in its inner face With sockets, a cross-bar or carrier having on its upper face studs or projections entering the sockets in the cover and posts having telescoping sections secured respectively to the cross-bar and to the body of the file, substantially as set forth.
3. A le comprising a body having a box provided with a bottom plate and end plates, tubes projecting upwardly from the bottom plate of the boX and open and unobstructed at their upper ends, a cross-bar or carrier having depending pins to fit in said tubes, said bar resting at its ends on the end plates of the boX, and a fastening for securing the ,i said carrier in position for use, substantially as set forth.
4. A file comprising a body having a box to receive the ends of the papers filed, said box having end plates, a cross-bar resting at its ends on said end plates, posts having telescoping sections secured, respectively, to the cross-bar and the said box, studs or projections eXtending upwardly from the said crossbar, and a cover having sockets to receive said studs or projections When the cover is closed substantially as set forth.
