SLEEPING-BOOTH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
`iratented Apri123, 1 907.
Applicationlied June 22, 1906.` Serial No. 322,804.
' To a/ZZ whom t mag/concern:
Be it'4 known that' I, EDWARDFSTEMPEL, a
citizen` of the United States, residing at' Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have inventedv new and able, lightk in. construction and when erected it will prevent the entrance thereto of reptiles or small animals.
Another object is-to provide aA booth that is storni anddir't prooi` andi that is provided with suitable adjustable means ofv ventilation.
Another object' isitoI provide a booth that will not be effected by'high winds owing to the lowness of the wallsand the novel manner in which the supports are guyed.
Another Objectis to provide abooth whose sides can be separately adjusted so that the occupant canhave protection from the sun, wind' or rain from one side while the other side can be kept open to provide for ventilation and the view therefrom.
Another object is to-provideabooth from which the bedding need not be removed and exposed duringa wind or rain storm when it is desired to remove it to a different place or position.
I accomplish these objects by means of the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a perspective view of my improved sleeping booth in its erected position.
In the drawings my improved booth is illustrated in its erected position and preferably consists of a rectangular box-like structure of canvas comprising an upper section 8 and a lower section 9 united at the rear asV at 10, and having corner supporting poles 5 and 6 preferably constructed of bamboo as that material provides the requisite strength and lightness. The rear poles 6 are considerably shorter than the front poles so that it will give the roof the desired pitch to turn the rain. The upper section 8 of the booth is composed of a rearwardly inclined top or roof 7 and is provided with downwardly extending front and side walls 11 on whose lowerA edges are a series of loops 1.2 which are adapted to engage buttons 13 .that are 'secured on the outer side adjacent the edge of the upwardly extending side wall 1.4 of the lower section 9. The separation of these I side walls form a longitudinal opening bv means of which the tent is furnished sulficient ventilation as well as a means of entrance thereto and exit therefrom. The lower section 9 consists of bottom 9 and upwardly extending side and front walls 14.
The supporting poles have on opposite ends transverse holes 1.5 which register with holes `1.6 `in the upper and lower corners of the two'sections 8 and 9. Passing through these holes 15 and 1'6 andsuitably secured thereto by'meansV of knots 15" and 1.5 are upper and lower guy ropes 17 and 13' which are suitably secured to pegs 19, each of the guy ropes being supplied with the usual keys 20. The outer knots 15 serve to retain the supporting poles to the upper and lower sections, so that whenit` is desired to removethe booth after being erected the poles will remain attachedto the sections in their respective corners, thus facilitating subsequent erections. The guy ropes 17 which 'pass through the outer ends of the supporting poles have an extension'21 in the outer end of which is secured the loop which is adapted to be enw gaged by a tape 23 whichv is secured to the upwardly extending front wall of the lower section, by means of which the front and side walls of the lower section are prevented from sagging. lt will be seen that after the upper and lower sections are secured together all danger from the entrance of reptiles or other animals is avoided. The front wall of the upper section at its corners is provided with tapes 24, which are adapted to engage loops 25 which are secured to the lower edge of the upper section at the corners thereof. By the means above `described the front and side walls of the upper section may be adjusted to any desired height, for instance if the rain or sun came from one side of the tent that side could be let down so as to afford protection to the occupants while the other side could be drawn up to insure sufiicient ventilation and outlook therefrom.
The ends of the corner poles are held against outward movement by the portion of the canvas which forms the side and end walls of the booth and as the poles are guyed from both top and bottom the booth can be quickly erected.
By this construction a light and convenient sleeping booth is provided which is peculiarly adapted to the requirement of min- IOO IIO
loungers, as the canvas forming the same weighs but little more than the canvas strips required for rolling up bedding. By guying the corner poles at both top and bottom and by placing the same inside the wall a booth is provided that cannot be blown down as long as the guy ropes and pegs stand.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :w
1. .In a sleeping booth, a top; a bottom; supporting posts for said top; side and end walls attached to said top and bottom and horizontally divided into two parts; means to hold the parts of said side and end walls apart.
2. In a sleeping booth, a top; a bottom; supports for said top; side and end walls secured to said top and extending downwardly toward said bottom; side and end walls secured to said bottom and extending upwardly to meet said top side and end walls; and means on 'said top to hold the bottom edge of said top side and end walls at any desired height.
3. In a sleeping booth, arectangular top; a rectangular bottom; supporting posts for said top; side walls secured to said top and bottom on all four sides thereof and being slit horizontally on three sides midway between said top and bottom; and securing means adapted to hold the slits in said side walls as wide open as desired.
4. In a sleeping booth, arectangular top; a rectangular bottom; supporting posts for said top; side walls secured to said top and bottom on all four sides thereof and being of said supporting posts; side walls secured to sai-d top and bottom on all four sides thereof andbeing slit horizontally on three sides midway between said top and bottom; securing means adapted to hold the slitl in said side walls as wide open as desired; and securing means on said side walls adapted'to secure the .portions of said side walls together.
6. In a sleeping booth, a rectangular top sloping towards the rear; supporting posts for said top; guys secured to the tops and bottoms of said posts; a rectangular bottom; a solid rear wall attached to both said top and bottom; horizontally divided front andside walls attached to both top and bottom; means to hold the upper and lower sections of said side and front walls apart; and means to secure the upper and lower sections of said side and front walls together.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 16th day of June, 1906.
