BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1906.
Application filed June '7, 1905. Serial No. 264,126.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to form a book-holder which will conveniently hold or leaflets for the purpose of reading, studying, or comparing the same.
It is frequently desirable in educational or scientific occupations or investigations and in various other cases to have several books readily accessible for inspection at the same time, and this invention serves to answer by the means to be hereinafter described.
In the drawin s, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holc er. Fi 2 is an end view thereof, showing the books in position. Fig. 3 is a modification showing a holder adapted to support a single book.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 indicates a clamp-bracket attachable to a table, desk, or the like and having a horizontally-swinging arm 11 pivoted on a rod 12, provided with suitable collars 11 for regulating the height of the arm. The rod is of sufficient length so that the arm may be placed above or below the bracket at the desired height.
On the outer end of the arm 11 and pivoted thereto at 12 is a plate 13, supporting a horizontal wire frame 14, formin the ledge on which the book rests. Crossars 13 serve to strengthen the wire frame. The wire forming the frame is bent up at the back to form two inclined supports 15, preferably in the form of an expanded loop. A book may rest against each of these supports. A setscrew 16, the end of which forms the pivot 12, serves to clamp the plate 13 to the arm 11 and enables the book-rest to be turned in a horizontal plane to any position desired and held in that position. Each of the bookrests stated is provided with a pair of loops l l l so that while one 19, which press against the covers of the book and hold the same firmly in position against the large loops 15, the loops 19 being inserted within the book-covers. The loops 19 are formed of wire, which is continued and bent around the frame 14 to form spiral springs 14*, between which is a leaf-holding loop 17, which presses against the leaves of the book, near the lower edge thereof, and serves to hold the book open at the place wanted. To turn the leaves, the loop 17 can be lifted or pressed out to allow the leaves to pass. A supplemental book, pamphlet, or leaflet holder consists of a rod 20, which has at its outer end a clip 21 and is pivotally connected at its inner end to the plate 13, so that it may be swung from side to side.
The construction shown permits two books to be held beside each other with a leaf or sheet, such as a lesson-leaf held in the clip 21, which may swing from one side to the other, book is being used the leaf or pamphlet will be on the other side of the holder. In the modified form shown in Fig.
3 provision is made for one book only, the de-.
tail construction being similar to one side of the double holder.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A book-support formed of wire bent to form bottom and back rests, and a leaf and cover holder formed of wire coiled around the wire of the bottom rest and having upwardlyprojecting loops.
2. A book-holder comprising a support, a wire frame bent to form a bottom rest and a pair of back-rests side by side, a plate secured to said bottom rest between the back-rests and pivoted to the support, and a swingiii arm pivoted at its inner end to the plate anc having a clip at its outer end.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD J. MYERS.
