Description

Hitch tatcs detriti @ffice BERNHARD H. ZINN'QOF NEW YORK, N.Y.
Letters Patent No. 76,577, [lated April 7, 1868.
IMPROVED EXTENSION-CHAIR.
dige Stlgihirlt retard tu in tlgrst glitters itttntmit mating @swt at tip time.
TO ALL WHM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD H. ZINN, 'of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and improved Extension-Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the nrt to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which--` Figure 1 is a side view of my improved chair. Figure 2 is a section of the samethrough the line z fig. 1. Figure 3 is a tcp View of the ratchet-links and` catch. Figure 4 is a side view of the same.. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. The object of this invention is to provide an extension-chair, of such simplicity of construction that it can be afforded at a comparatively small price; It consists of the folding foot-rest and ratchet-links, together with' other devices, perfecting the whole, as willliereinafter be more fully set forth.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, an ordinary X-chair, composed of the crossed and pivoted parts A B, is shown', provided with the ratchet-links a t, one of which is slotted, as shown at c, and both lap or pass beyond each other, as shown. i I
A catch-plate, d, is pivoted to the link I), the pivot-bolt passing through the link b and the slot of the link' a, and also through the lugs forming the lower cud of the catchplate, which latter is set astride of the two links, as shown. lThis device enables the parts A and B to be adjusted at any angle within the limits of the slot c. l l
When the chair is to be adjusted to bring the parts A and Bmore vertical, the weight of the catch-plate causes it to catch against the ratchebteeth e e, on the plate a, and when the parts A and B are to be adjusted to a morehorizontal position, the catch-platcs are lifted by the sitter, and the parts fall open to a. position suit- I able for reclining. y
The arm-strap C is lengthened or shortened by theratchet-rollcr D, as shown. The cloth or other flexible seat is shown at E. I i
The foot-rest is composed of the padded or cushioned boards G H, which are'hinged together, as shown at I. 'The part H is hinged to a cross-brace, connecting the two parts A A of the chair.
The legs J are aiixed rigidly to thc part G of the foot-rest, and are provided with an extension-device, for the purpose of raising or lowering the foot-rest to suit the sitters position.
The said extension-device.consists of the legs L L, connectedhy the cross-piece K, which latter is provided with holes, to permit it' to slide up and down on the legs J J, as shown.A I
Spring-catches t t, pivoted within a recess in thc legs L L, catch upon notches Z Z, as shown, for the purpose of holding the legs L L at ditercnt points of their extension. Projections fie', withdraw the catches 7th .from the notches, when the part Gr is to bc lowered.
When the foot-rest is not wanted, it is doubled under the seat, as shown at H G J L', and is thus placed out of the way. I
The links a and b are attached to theparts A and B by an eycbolt,f, and pivot-bolt, g, respectively.
Thus my invention-provides an extension-chair which is simple, durable, and cheap, and not likely to get out of repair.
I claim as new, und desiieto secure byLetters Patent- 1. The links a and d, and'catch el, substantially as shown and described, in combination with the parts A and B of an X-chair, all as and for the purpose set forth.
9` The extension-legs L L K, ratchet-legs J J, and spring-lever It 7i, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described,in combination with the hinged foot-rest Gr H and parts A B of an X-chair, all as set forth.
Thc'above specification of my invention signed by me, this 13th day of February, 1868.
BERNHARD H. ZIN N.
