To a whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J AMES ANeUs WADE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norfolk, .in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Policemens Clubs; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the upper portion of the club. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the opening or seat a in the top of the club. Fig. 4 is a detail view of part 61.

This invention relates to clubs for policemen and watchmen; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

The object of the invention is mainly to pro vide a means of attachment for the wrist-strap which will not present a metallic surface around the handle and which will at the same time provide for the free turning of the club without twisting the strap.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates a club of the character referred to having the handle end 6. In the end of this handle is bored concentric with the contour of its grasp-wall a cylindrical opening 0 of about one-halfinch diameter and suflicient length, and said opening is threaded to receive a tube 0? of corresponding size, which is threaded on its external surface to suit the threads of the bore a in the wood. This threaded tube is provided at its end with a rim-collar h, which is designed to engage the end of the handle when said tube is screwed home. tion of the end of the handle and surrounded by a considerable surface of the wood of the end it is not in position to expose a metallic surface to the hand or wrist in the use to which it may be subjected.

Through the longitudinal passage 6 of the tube extends a split key formed of a strip of metal, which is rounded on one side, so that the branches thereof when brought together in the shank portion f form a journal which will turn freely in the cylindrical passage e of the tube. At the outer end of the key is formed an eye g, and at its inner end the branches are spread apart to provide the oifsetslvls, which serve to hold the key in place. The ordinary wrist-strap is secured to the club by connecting the eye of the key to the solid ring 17?. of the strap beforethe key is placed in position in the tube.

Should the strap be cut or broken, the threaded tube can be readily turned out of its bearing in the wooden handle and the split key removed for the attachment of a new strap.

Should the club be wrested from the gras of the policeman, the swivel action will prevent any twisting of the strap around his wrist to disable him.

The handle is not loaded with metal around its end, and in this way contact of metal with the hand, which is not desirable, especially in cold weather, is avoided. Furthermore, the club is not unduly loaded at the handle end.

Having described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A club having a threaded hole in its end, and therein a threaded tube having a rotatable split key provided with an eye in its outer end, substantially as specified.
