BAT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 748,000, dated December 29, 1903.
Application filed November 19 1902. Serial No- 131,914. (No model.)
To all whom it Wwty concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY HAYES MUR- NANE, of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Bat, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a base-ball bat with which the batsman may strike the ball to the best advantage, and this is accomplished by the batsman holding the bat with his hands at the proper distance from the ends of the bat, so that it will be properly balanced and insure a powerful and effective blow in striking the ball.
A further object of my invention is to prevent the bat slipping through the batsmans hands when he is about to strike the ball.
These objects I attain by my invention, which is a bat with a ridge or fillet at the desired distance from the end of the bat to indicate the point at which the bat is to be seized and to provide a grip for the hands of the batsman.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved bat. Fig. 2 is a section of the handle portion, and Fig. 3 is a similar section of a modified form.
The bodyAof the bat is made as usual and tapered, as shown, and the ridge or fillet B is integral with the bat. In Fig. 3 I have shown a detachable ring B, of rubber or the like, which fits in groove 1).
In using my bat the batsman is sure to seize the bat always in such a position that he will get the most force and the best direction out of his stroke. The batsman seizes the bat with one hand above and one hand below the ridge, and thus gets a firm grip on the bat, which cannot slip through his hands. A slight differencein the position of his hands will make much difierence in his ability to bat, and my invention insures a grip at the right spot and prevents losing of that grip when the ball is to be struck.
The position of the ridge 0r fillet above described may be different on different bats to suit the different batsmen, and if a detachable ring is used it may of course be of any material that is sufficiently stiff.
What I claim as my invention is-- The improved base-ball bat abovedescribed tapering from its larger outer end to its smaller inner end and circular throughout in crosssection with an annular fillet determining the balance of the bat and encircling the bat between the parts to be gripped, the axis of the fillet being coincident with the axis of the bat and the fillet extending outward a considerable distance from the bat to form a bearing against which the side of the hand bears in batting, substantially as, and for the purposes, specified.
