PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED DOOR-SIGN AND LETTER-SLOT.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,906, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed September 23, 1903- Serial No. 3314,319- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. WIMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Huntingdon, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door-Sign and Letter-Slot, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a back View of-the lower part of the device.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple door-plate which shall combine a signholding means and a closure device for theletter-slot in the door; and it consists of certain novel features of construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring to the drawings by letters, a designates a metal plate or frame, in the upper part of which is formed an opening for the reception of a suitable sign-plate b and in the lower part of which is formed a horizontal letter-slot, which is closed by a gravitating flap or plate a.
The sign-plate consists of a suitable card 6, having printed on its outer face the name of the occupant and the number of the house,- and this card is preferably covered by a pane of glass d. Both the card and the glass are set in a rabbet or recess formed in the inner edge of the frame, so that when the frame is secured to the door by screws or other fastenings e its inner side will be'flat against the same and not only hold the card and glass in place, but also exclude water from the same.
Theclosure plate or flap c is pivotally hung in the door-slot g from lugs f, projecting from the main plate into the letter-slot, said plate or flap normally closing the slot in the main plate, but being free to be swung back by the insertion of a letter or paper. The flap is slightly weighted on its lower inner edge, so as to swing it normally a short distance into the slot in the plate, and thereby shed the rainwater off upon the outwardly and downwardly beveled lower edge 71 of said slot.
By thus making the flap of substantially the same length as the slot and weighting it at its lower end on its inner side, so that it will swing into the slot, the front face of the flap is made to normally incline downward and outward in substantially the same direction as the bevel edge b, so that the flap will effectnally shed rain-water, even though it he used on an upright plate, as in the drawings.
It will be observed that I combine in a convenient form and in close juxtaposition a door-sign and a letter-slot-closure device which will be easy to attach and to manufacture and which will elfectually prevent rain and snow water entering the letter-slot or the sign-holder.- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
"In a letter-slot device, the combination of an upright plate, provided with a horizontal letter-slot, whose lower edge inclines outward and downward,a closure plate or flap pivotally hung on the back of said plate above the upper edge of said slot and of substantially the same length as the slot, a weight being formed on the inner side of the lower edge of the plate, whereby said plate is normally swung into the slot and will have its front face normally inclined downward and outward, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 23d day of September, 1903.
JOHN R. WIMER.
