CURB Box AND COCK SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent 0. 7 11, 177, dated October 13, 1903. Application filed May 10,1902. :SerialNo. 106,718. (Nd model.)
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. FLINN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Oambria and new and useful Improvements in Curb Box and Cook Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in supports for curb boxes and cocks, and has for its primary object to provide means for immovably supporting the curb-box within the support, so
15, as to prevent the curb-box from turning, as
well as insuring that the same when placed in position over the curb-cock will not be displaced while filling in around the curb-box, and thereby insuring the desired relative position between the curb-box and curb-cock being maintained at all times.
It is a well-known fact in connection with the placing of curb boxes that frequently when the curb-boxes have been placed in po- 2 5 sition over the cocks the box is shifted during the process of filling in the earth around the same, so that the desired relative position between the curb-box'and the curb-cock is altered, frequently to such an extent that the wrench adapted to be inserted through the curb-box for opening or closing the curb-cock cannot be engaged with the curb -cock for operating the same. 7
My invention lies in providing a rectangular base or support which is not liable to turn and which is constructed to receive within it the rectangular base of the curb-box and hold the said box against axial or lateral movement. This base or support is also provided 0 'with means for positioning and supporting the curb-cock and the water, gas, or other pipe or line inwhich the curb-cock is interposed above the surface of the base or support.
practical embodimentof my invention, and in describing the invention infdetail reference is had to the said drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved support in position, showing the curb-box in side elevation and the curb-cock in end 'elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain In the accompanying drawings I Ishow a of my improved support, showing the curb cock in position it occupies when the support is used." Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sec-' tional view of the support.
' In Fig. 1 of the drawings I show the manner of setting the curb-box and curb-cock in connection with the employment of my improved support. The support embodies a rec- 6o tangular block or base 1', which may be formed of any suitable material and where formedof metal may be cast, molded, or otherwise made, though this block or base may be made of metal, wood, a composition,- or any suitable material. The base or block is provided in its upper face with a substantially square cutaway portion or recess 2, and at opposite sides of this'cut-away portion or recess it is provided on its upper face with rounded projec- 7o tions 3, which are formed with curved seats 3 above the surface 1 of the base 1, which are adapted to receive either the extensions 4. of the curb-cock 5 or the ends of the water or other pipe or line 6. The curb-cock is genorally employed of such size that the joint between the extensions 4; of the curb-cook and the line 6 will lie in the seats 3, thus practically supporting the curb-cock at opposite sides thereof above the surface 1 of the base 1, as will be'observed by reference to Figs. 1 and2 of the-drawings. The recess '2, besides receiving the curb-cock 5 therein,
ismade of a size to receive the squared base of the curb-box 7, the usual form of which is shown in Fig. l of the drawings,'and in practice this curb-box is so constructed as to straddle the curb-cock 5 in a manner that the valve 8 of the cock 5 will be central of the opening in the curb-box. The upper end 0 of the curb-box, as is well known, is flush,or practically flush, with the line 9 of the street or pavement. w
In practice Ihave found that after the curb-. box has been placed in position over the curbcock, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings," in filling in around the curb-box the latte'r is frequently shifted to one sideor the other, so that the valve 8 will'no longer be in the position central of the curb-box, and it is consequently difficult of access. By em ploying my improved support the base of the curb-box fits neatly in the recess 2, and the latter is prevented from any axial or lateral movement and a true position between the curb-box and the curb-cock is at all times maintained, so that access to the valve 8 may readily be had at any time through the curbbox. This support being of a considerable greater size than the base of the curbbox also obviates the danger of the latter sinking, as is frequently the case Where this box is set in position Without any base or support.
Having fully described myinvention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A curb box and cook support constructed with a broad rectangular base-block having a deep rectangular unobstructed recess for the reception of the rectangular base of a curb-box and the cock, and rounded projections surmountiug opposite sides of the baseblock each projection having a curved seat located at a higher elevation than the surface of the base-block for supporting the pipe connections out of contact with the surface of the base-block.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN R. FLINN.
