MINNIE E. BUOKLEY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINATION NETHER GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,200, dated September 16, 1902.
Application filed March 5, 1902. $erial No. 96,810. KNo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MINNIE E. BUOKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, Stateof Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination Nether Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional elevation, the garment being shown in connection with a corset. Fig. 2 is arear view, and Fig. 3 is a front'view.
My invention relates to combination nether garments, and more particularly to a combination chemise and corset-cover, my object being to produce a neat garment of simple construction so made that there is, in effect, but one set of shoulder-straps.
To these ends and also to improve generally upon garments of the character indicated my invention consists in the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring now more particularly to thedrawings, 1 indicates a chemise of usual construction, which for the purposes of the present description may be designated as the main portion of the present garment, said chemise being of the customary low-neck type and having no other sleeves than the shoulderstraps 2. The corset-cover 3 is stitched to the chemise at its upper edge across the back and has its shoulder-straps coincident with and stitched to the shoulder-straps of the chemise, said corset-cover being stitched at its upperfront edge to the upper front edge of the chemise, as shown at 4. These stitches, however, do not extend entirely across the front of the garment, but end a short distance in advance of the armholes, as shown, whereby each side of the corset-cover is left with a flap 5, which can be readily folded back to permit the application and adjust ment of the corset A, the said construction permitting the entire corset-cover to be readily raised or lifted away from the chemise when desired, as in applying the corset. The meeting edges of the flaps can be secured together in any suitable manner, as by pins or by providing buttons 6 and buttonholes 7, or, if desired, the flaps can be provided with extended ends 8 and fastened together by tying said ends.
In use the garment is put on with the flaps of the corset-cover loose, and the corsetis then applied over the chemise or main portion of the garment and under the corset-cover, after which the corset-cover is adjusted properly over the corset and its flaps are secured together. When upon the person, although the usual chemise and corset-cover are provided there is but one shoulder-strap over each shoulder, thus avoiding the bulkiness and untidy appearance under thin goods when chemises and corset-covers of the customary construction are employed. Furthermore, trimming is needed for but one set of shoulder-straps and one upper back edge.
Manifestly within the scope of my inven tion an undervest provided with no sleeves except shoulder-straps could be substituted for the hereinbefore-mentioned chemise. In fact, I am aware that many minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a garment of the character described, a main garment portion, a c0rset-cover, permanently connected therewith, both of which terminate at their upper portion in a single set of shoulder-straps connected to said main garment and said corset-cover; substantially as described.
2. In a garment of the character described, a main garment portion, and a corset-cover secured thereto at the back and for a portion only of the front, said corset-cover terminating in integral flap portions separable from said main garment from the termination of the connection between said main garment and corset-cover to the free ends of said flaps substantially as described.
3. In a garment of the character indicated, a main garment portion, shoulder straps thereon, and a corset-cover permanently connected to said main garment portion and proand main garment portion are secured together at the front, and a single set of shoul der-straps; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature,in the presence of two Witnesses, this 26th day of February, 1902.
