TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. ABBOTT, of Niles, in the county of Cayuga., and Stat-c of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Treadles for Propelling Machinery; and I do -hercby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making part of this specification.
This invention rela-tes to the arrangement of a double treadle for communicating, through the medium of a crank, a reciprocating motion to a connecting-rod, by which power may be applied to any required use; and it consists in a new combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter set forth.
The treadles are attached to a frame, consisting, as shown, of four bottom boards A, B, C, and I), to which are attached four potss E G- H F, connected by the braces I .I K. The two treadlcs L and M are hinged at one end to the frame, the other ends being supported by straps or their equivalents O and P, which are wound around an elliptical roller, Q, from opposite sides, so that, as the treadles are alternately operated, a reciprocating revolution shall be given to the roller, one of the straps being wound about the roller as the other is unwound by the action of the foot pressing down the treadle to which it is attached. The roller Q is attached to the vertical posts on cach end by suitablejournal-boxes; and on the extension of the axis is placed a oranli, R, connected by a pitman with the mechanism to be driven. This crank is so set on the axis that the cranka-rm shall be at right angles to the conjugate and parallel with the transverse axis of the elliptical roller, so that the power shall be the greatest at the points of greatest resistance.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the treadles L M, the straps O P, the roller Q, and crank R, when said parts are constructed and arranged in relation to 'one another substantially as set forth.
W'ILLIAM'C. ABBOTT.
