THlLL-TUG BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,589, dated November 12,1901.

Be it known that I, JAMES T. OooNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cooksville, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thill-Tug Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to trace-carrier buekles; and the object of the same is to construct a device of this character which shall be simple and compact in structure and efficient in operation.

My novel construction is fully described in this specification 'and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my device and the tug. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the device without the tug.

Like numerals of reference designate like parts in both views of the drawings.

The numeral 1 designates the buckle, which has parallel side bars 2, having their lower ends curved around and connected by a lower cross-bar 3, designed to serve as a keeper. An upper cross-bar or spreader 4 connects the upper ends of the bars 2, is substantially triangular in cross-section, and has rounded diverging flanges 5 on the upper side thereof, which are designed to embrace the trace and also to serve as spreaders to hold the loop of the tug open to enable the trace to be inserted therein. The anges 5 are rounded on the edges at 6 to keep from injuring the trace. Keepers 17 are located adjacent to the bar 4 and serve to confine the tug. To rigidly secure the thill-tug against slipping, a round rigid tongue 8 is mounted centrally of a bar 9, connecting the side bars 2 and on opposite sides from the lower cross-bar 3. The tongue 8 eX- tends over to a point in the plane of the bar 3, and is thus in position to engage the straps and hold them against accidental disengagement.

In operation a tug 10, provided with perforations 11, is inserted in the kbuckle 1 in the manner shown in Fig. l, with the perforations 11 engaged by the rigid tongue S. The tug l0 is riveted at -13 to a strap 12, which passes down through the keeper 7 and is designed to be connected to a belly-band at 14. The upper ends l5 are connected to the back-band of the harness.

I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modiiied in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is

A trace carrier buckle, comprising side bars, a lower cross-bar, an upper cross-bar having diverging anges, keepers located adjacent to said upper cross-bar, and a crossbar bearing a tongue constructed to engage the thill-tug, substantially as described.
