TABLE-SUPPORT.
s'rnozirroerron forming sea of Letters Patent No. 685,689, dated October 29, 1901.
Application filed June 17,1901. Serial No. 64,910. (Nomodh) To ctZZ whom it may coiwerit:
Be it known that I, FRANK AUSTIN MILLI- KAN, of Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in table-supports, having reference to that class used for exhibition purposes, wherein one table is superposed above and independently of another.
' The present invention is designed as an improvement upon the means shown and described in Letters Patent No. 662,799, issued to me November 27, 1900. 4
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a transverse section adjacent to one of the horizontal supports. Fig. 3 shows one of the uprights of the vertical supports.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the vertical supports, each consisting of two posts or legs 2, connected by cross-bars 3. The up per end of each post is split and formed with an opening through which passes a pipe or rod 4. A bolt 5 serves to bind the split end of each post to the pipe, and by loosening these bolts the vertical supports may be adjusted longitudinally of the frame composed thereof and thelongitudinal connecting-pipes. By suitable means other sections of pipe may be connected to the ends of the pipes shown.
6 designates the horizontal rests for the table-legs. They are extended transversely of the pipes and may be adjusted longitudinally thereof and transversely thereto. Each of these rests is composed of two blocks 7 and 8, the former having openings for the pipes and a cut-away in its upper surface to'accommodate the block 8, which latter is held to block 7 by strap-irons 9. In the upper faces of the two blocks are grooves 10 to accommodate the casters of the table-legs. The frame is of such height as to permit an ordinary table or desk to be positioned beneath the pipes, and the vertical supports are adj ustable longitudinally of the frame to accommodate tables or desks of different sizes. The superposed table or desk rests upon the horizontal rests or supports, which'latter may, as stated, be adjusted on the pipes and also transversely by sliding the block 8 outwardly or inwardly, so that the casters will fit in the grooves 10.
I have found in actual practice that a support having the characteristics herein pointed out has many advantages in that the parts are strong and durable and not liable to be readily deranged and the adjustment thereof may be quickly and easily accomplished.
I claim as my inventiou-- l. A device constructed to permit of its being extended over a table to support a second or superposed table above the first, composed of a series of vertical supports, pipes or rods connecting said supports, horizontally-disposed rests mounted on said pipes or rods and having each an extensible member capable of adjustment transversely of the pipes or rods, as set forth.
2. A device constructed to permit of its being extended over a table to support a second or superposed table above the first, composed of a series of vertical supports having each twoposts or uprights, with openings in their upper ends, pipes or rods extended through said openings, and horizontal rests also havin g openings through which said pipes or rods are passed, said vertical supports and said horizontal rests being adjustable longitudinally of the pipes or rods, substantially as set forth.
3. The-combination with the vertical supports having each posts or uprights formed with openings in their upper ends, of the, longitudinally-extended pipes or rods, horizontal rests also formed with openings, said pipes or rods being passed through the openings in the posts and the horizontal rests, said horizontal rests having each an extensible section,- substantially as set forth. I
4. The combination with the Vertical supports having each two posts or uprights the upper ends of which are split and formed with openings, of the pipes or rods inserted through said openings, means for binding the split ends, and the horizon tal rests orsupports comspecification in the presence of two subscribposed each of two blocks, one of which has ing Witnesses. openings to accommodate said pipes or rods, and straps for holding the other block and FRANK AUSTIN MILLIKAN' permit of its adjustment transversely of the Witnesses: pipes or rods, substantially as set forth. Mrs. J. R. LAMB,
In testimony whereof I have signed this W. H. SMILEY.
