PUMPING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,980, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed October 2, 1899.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. SHEPARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherry Creek, in the county of Chautauquaand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a portable hand pumping device; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap device adapted to pump the liquid from a pail or other receptacle and direct it upon any desired object, such as plants.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The invention is susceptible to various changes in the form,proportion,and minordetails of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved device, also illustrating a pail supported therefrom and partially broken away to expose the device. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section illustrating the interior construction. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on or about line a Ct, Fig. 2.
My preferred adaptation of an air-pump comprises a barrel 1, having a screw-threaded nozzle 2 and a plungerrod 3, adapted to move longitudinally within the barrel, and having an operating-handle 4 at its outer end and a plunger 5 at its inner end. i
A valve device comprising a tubular coneshaped casing or barrel 6, having an upper screw-threaded interior tube 7 and a lower screw-threaded interior tube 8, is detachably secured to the pump by screwing the nozzle 2 into the tube 7. The lower end of the tube 8 is partially closed by a screw-cap 9, having a central opening 10, and a ball 11 is normally seated in said opening to close it. (See Fig. 2.) To prevent the liquid from forcing the ball 11 up out of the tube 8, a strip 12 is extended across the upper end of said tube, (see Fig. 3,) which limits the upward movement of the ball. An annular leather washer Serial No. 732,295. (No model.)
13 is also placed in the bottom of the screw cap to form a tight joint when the ball is seated therein. A supplementary casing or barrel 14., having its lower end closed and its upper end open, is connected to the main casing 6 by a short connecting-tube 15, which is not provided with a valve, and a screwthreaded tubular portion 16 is mounted in the interior of the upper end of said supplementary casing 14. The lower end of the tubular portion 16 is partially closed, and a ball 17 is normally seated in the central opening 18 in said lower end. An annular leather washer 19 is also placed between the ball 17 and the lower part of the portion 16 to form atight joint. A screw-threaded tube 20 is connected at its upper end to a pipe or hose '21 and is adapted to screw into the upper end of the tubular portion 16.
To limit the upward movement of the hall 17 under pressure of the liquid being pumped, a strip 22, similar to the strip 12 referred to in connection with the main casing, is extended across the upper portion of the interior of the tube 20.
A metal nozzle 23, having an opening of reduced diameter, is preferably attached to the outer end of the hose or pipe 21.. (See Fig. 1.)
The pail or receptacle 24, containing the liqnid,is supported from the pump byhanging its bail upon the hooks 26, which are in turn attached to a handle 27. This handle 27 is longitudinally movable upon a screwthreaded rod 28, the upper end 29 of which is formed with an eye which fits upon a pin 30, extending'from the upper portion of the pump. The down ward movement of the handle 27 upon the rod is limited by the thumbscrew 31, thus providing for adjusting the handle to different heights of pails by turning the thumb-screw.
The pump is provided with an air hole or opening 32,.and a curved hood 33 is arranged partially around said opening to prevent the liquid from spurting upon the operator while pumping.
The lower end of the cone-shaped casing or barrel 6 is provided with a series of openings 34 for the passage of the liquid'into the valve device, and the screw-threaded interior tube 8 terminates at or above the plane of said openings, thereby raising the ball-valve 11 above the pail-bottom.
The operation of the device will be easily understood from the foregoing.
I claim 'as my invention 1. A hand. pumping device comprising of said casing and adapted to screw upon said nozzle, a tubular screw-threaded lower portion fastened at its top edge to an intermediate portion of the interior of said casing, a
screw-cap upon said lower portion having an opening,a ball within said lower portion,a supplementary casing, a strip of material extending across above the ball, a horizontal tube unprovided With a valve and connecting to the main casing above said strip and to an intermediate part of the supplementary casing, a screw-threaded tubular part within the upper portion of the supplementary casing having a partially-closed lower end, a hose or pipe havinga screw-threaded metal portion adapted to screw into the screw-threaded tube of the supplementary casing, a ball within said tubular part normally seated in the opening of the partially-closed lower end of the screwthreaded tubular part, and a strip of material extending across and connected at its ends to the sides of the screw-threaded metal portion of the hose or pipe for limiting the upward pressure of the tudinally movable on said 'rod, hooks extend-- ing from said handle upon whicha pail is adapted to be supported and a thu mb-screw upon the rod below the handle, as set forth. l. The combination with a hand pumping device, of a rod supported from said pumping device, and an attachment mounted on said rod and having hooks adapted to catch over the hail of a pail, as set forth.
5. The combination with a hand pumping device of a screw-threaded rod supported from said pumping device, a handle longitudinally adjustable on said rod, and hooks extending from said handle and adapted to catch over the bail of a pail, as set forth.
