WALTER JOHN AUSTEN, Yor BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
wAlsT AND lSKIRT AOJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,386, dated October 9, 14900. Application filed November 22.1899. Serial No. 737,973. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER JOHN AUSTEN,
a citizen of the British Isles, residin g at 98 Peinbroke street, Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Waist and Skirt Adjuster, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to devices for holding a dress waist and Skirt to prevent their parting at the waist-line, and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and cheap device which will be light and Strong and capable of quick and easy attachment.4
To these ends the invention consists in the device substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the grure represents a perspective view of my device, showing also the safety-pin used in connection therewith for holding the adjustento the garments connected by it.
The device consists of a strip of metal D, preferably provided with enlarged rounded ends and formed of sheet metal bent to conform to the curvature of the waist The strip or plate is provided with a plurality of points or prongs, some of which extend upwardly and some downwardly to engage, respectively, the material of the skirt and the material of the waist. Said points are preferably formed by making V shaped cuts in the strip of sheet metal and bending the points slightly outward, those points which project upwardly being bent outward from the convex side of the strip and those which projectdownwardly bent outward from the concave side of the strip, whereby said pins will engage thematerial of the garments in an obvious manner.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an easy means for preventing the disarrangennent of the adjuster from itsproper position after it has been located. I therefore form a horizontal slot about midway of the strip to permit a safety-pin to be applied by forcing the point of said pin when opened into the space formed by said slot and through the fabric of the waist, preferably before putting the waist on, and then closing the safety-pin in the usual manner. This leaves the pin portion of the safety-pin acting as across-bar to prevent the accidental disarrangement of the adjuster. This gives the adjuster its proper location, and after putting on the waist the skirt may be put ou and prevented from sagging at the back by being engaged with the outwardly projecting points which extend from the convex side of the adjuster.
vAs will be obvious, the device may be applied by first locating the safety-pin in proper position attached to the waist, then moving it endwise so that one end of the pin can be turned outwardly, then passing the slot of the adjuster over the outwardly-turned end of the closed safety-pin and engaging the points of the adjuster with the waist, the safety-pin being of course pushed back to extend across both ends of the slot. This method of securing the adjuster to the waist allows of a ready Vrelease of the adjuster by simply passing the pin endwise until one end is within the slot, when the adjuster may be slipped off, allowing the safety-pin to remain in its positionv on the waist ready for reinsertion whenthe waist is again put on, retaining the same fixed position for the support of the skirt without the tendency of mutilation of the waist by the reinsertion of the safety-pin each time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A waist and skirt adjuster comprising a metallic strip having integral prongs for engaging a waist and skirt, said strip being provided with a slot to permit of the engagement of a safety-pin with a portion of the fabric of the waist through said Slot.
2. The combination with a plate having integral prongs for engaging the material of the skirt and waist, said plate having an elongated horizontal slot; of means adapted to be removably secured to the fabric of the waist, and to be passed through said slot, for removably securing said plate to the fabric of the waist. y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER JOHN AUSTEN.
